Publisher's summary

At the end of the world, the zombies are sometimes not the scariest monsters. The evil that now hides among the sheep seeking to devour its very heart.

Pastor Mike Brown and his wife, Lauren, are loved by the congregation of the church that rose from the ashes of the zombie apocalypse so much so the pair have convinced their followers that something they once thought of as demonic and forbidden is now acceptable if not ordained: cannibalism. But a darker secret, now discovered, could destroy everything. As Guntersville Island’s fledgling government has attempted to solve the mystery of a growing number of missing children, it has been implicated in the very inhuman crimes it has sought to solve by none other than the messianic leader. Forced to go to war with the very people it has sought to protect. Is the Nash worth saving? Will Mortimer make it out before the turf war turns the city into scorched earth?

Meanwhile, on the Viva Ancora, Mo, Smokes, and the remainder of the main protagonists are faced with the possible loss of an important member of its crew. Of course, a given: Mo’s constant complaining never ceases. Will evil win the battle for control of paradise? Who can stop the sadistic actions of a crowd driven by faith and hunger? Where have all the heroes gone? It’s the end of the world as we know it. Join us, friend. In places where the zombies bite....fish bite....life always bites....and some people bite and eat you!

need more Moe

There are so many characters now. half the time I was wondering who people are. Also I love these books! But describing every death is literally just filler. I will stick with this series for Moe and Smokes. Honestly it was 14 hours of wtf. Elmo and the other good characters is why I spent a credit . I completely get it, but I'm just disappointed.

Brilliant as usual.

As always totally engrossing with a variety of descriptions for really bad cases of diarrhea. For those with weak constitutions, this may put you off your favorite foods such as pudding or yogurt.

OMJESUS! THIS IS AWESOME!

Other than it's a f*cking masterpiece of bloody gloriousness-filled wtf just happened greatness...
I definitely RECOMMEND THIS BOOK! If you're around young ones, church folk or others that don't like foul language, use ear buds. Javon is the reining Master of Fan Killing! Even though this is book 9, it's just as awesome as if it was the first. Mo and the crew are still just as awesome. Thank you Javon, S.W and Andrew for making me stay up all freaking night because I couldn't stop listening. I can't wait to see what happens next!

A Wild Ride Through The ZA Continues...

Book nine of the Zombie Upheaval story does not disappoint! For those unfamiliar with the series, imagine the zombie apocalypse as envisioned by "Beevis and Romero". Author Javon Bonds serves up delectable characters with a heaping helping of graphic gore (as well as copious penis and poop jokes.) Do yourself a favor and read this book. Just be prepared to snicker like a middle schooler.

What a ride

Pastor Brown is still serving BBQ to the masses, the congregation finds out what they have been eating, and is accepting of this new way of life. Meanwhile the rest of the town is fighting the rumors they had something to do with the missing children and has started a civil war on the island. Mo is still here complaining away like normal, but the crew on the Viva Ancora is dealing with losing one of their own as Easy’s girl gets bit by one of the blunitics.
I really enjoy this series. Even when it gets bloody, messy, and a lot of bodies are left behind. This book has a lot of bodies left behind, a lot. Narrator S.W. Salzman will forever be Mo, and Smokes no matter what. This team of author and narrator have clicked and they really draw you into the story. This series might not be for everyone, but for everyone else this is a ride of a lifetime.

By the will of the screenwriter

My only warning is that maybe you might not want to listen during breakfast or lunch or brunch. Maybe just avoid eating while listening. Javan Bonds had so much fun slicing and dicing for our entertainment, while enticing you for more. The need to know is slicing through my diced up brain and now I have to wait for more!

Nobody writes bloodier death scenes than Bonds!

Zombie Upheaval is the 9th book in Javan Bond's Still Alive series and continues the series after Zombie Crusade. If you've never read or listened to a book in the Still Alive series, go read the review of the Still Alive: Series Box Set (Books 1-4), as getting the omnibus is an excellent and economical way to start the series. But if you've made it a few books into the series or have finished book eight and you're wondering whether or not to continue, the answer is easy: hell yes, you should.

First, let's discuss one of Zombie Upheaval's best qualities: the graphic and explicit descriptions of violence and gore. Most stories use violence as a plot device. In those stories, characters resolve conflict through violent escalation only when it's necessary to move the narrative forward. The Still Alive series takes a different approach. Instead, the narrative in the series primarily exists as a vehicle to bring forth violence, gore, and utter brutality. To call it gratuitous violence is a vast understatement -- unless you are using "gratuitous" to describe the violence as a generous and kind gift provided to the audience by the screenwriter. Using that definition, gratuitous would be the correct word, as Bonds has a disturbing talent for describing vicious, violent deaths through excruciatingly vivid and glorious detail. Violence can't be pointless if the violence is the point!

Though it might have been blasphemous to other fans of the series, I found that the previous book, Zombie Crusade (Book 8), might have tipped the scale toward too much blood and gore and not enough plot; I'm happy to state that Zombie Upheaval finds a better balance between scenes of near senseless violence and those that move the story forward. And though much of the humor remains macabre, the lighter comedy of the earlier books of the series has started to make a comeback as well. While I still think the earlier books (and the POV of Mo) were more enjoyable, I see good things foreshadowed in the future of the series.

On its own, Zombie Upheaval is pretty entertaining. I especially relished the partial return to the central plot with the crew of the Viva Ancora and the glimpses into the mind of Mo through the various short "mo-sodes." The continuing clash between the loyalists of Pastor Mike Brown and the government of Guntersville was bloody but amusing, and I think I'm going to enjoy following the antics of the perverted and cantankerous Mortimer. And as the components of the narrative arc are concluded, I can see a return to the Cora as a focus in future books -- which will be excellent.

And for the audiobook: I cannot understate how much talent S.W. Salzman demonstrates in the narration of the Still Alive series. I'm still baffled that a single narrator can voice all the extensively different characters and do so using unique and instantly recognizable voices. He perfectly captures personalities and brings life to the characters. The Still Alive series has always been fun and entertaining, but Salzman easily takes it to the next level.

zombies and laughter

Another book full of zombies, gore, and poop, this one will make you laugh, wince and possibly even hold your nose. Once again, Javan Bonds delivers a book that looks at the Zombie Apocalypse with humor and feces. There are characters you love and ones you love to see die horrible deaths
