  • E28: How to Avoid “Bad” Parenting and Become A Conscious Parent
    Sep 25 2024

In this episode, I sit down with my best friend Lydia, a former elementary school teacher turned homeschool mom, to discuss her unique approach to parenting. Lydia shares the three key pillars she believes every parent should implement to foster a healthy, nurturing environment:

    1. Be Kind – how kindness shapes our children’s emotional intelligence.
    2. Monitor What They Consume – the importance of being mindful of what children see on screens and consume in food and drink.
    3. Model the Behaviors You Want – the critical role parents play by self-regulating their own emotions before guiding their kids.

Lydia's insights offer practical, compassionate strategies for parents striving to avoid "bad parenting" and raise emotionally well-rounded children.

We'll explore the psychological roots of people-pleasing, backed by research on how it affects our mental health and relationships. You’ll learn about the societal and cultural pressures—especially for women—that make assertiveness feel daunting, and the high costs of always putting others' needs before your own.

  • E26: How Do You Know Something Bad Isn't Going To Happen?
    Aug 18 2024

In today's episode, I share a deeply personal story about my son's frightening emergency trip to the hospital—a moment filled with uncertainty and fear. As a parent, there's nothing more terrifying than seeing your child in distress, but in the midst of all the chaos, I found a way to stay calm. This calmness not only helped me manage the situation, but also brought comfort to my son during a time when he needed it most.

I reflect on how maintaining peace in the face of the unknown can make all the difference, not just in moments of crisis, but in everyday life. To illustrate this, I draw a parallel to a powerful scene from Finding Nemo, where Marlin and Dory are swallowed by a whale. Just like Marlin, I faced the overwhelming fear of not knowing what would happen next. But by embracing the uncertainty and letting go, I found a deeper sense of faith and peace—one that I believe we can all tap into during our most challenging moments.

Join me as I explore how letting go of our need to control the uncontrollable can help us navigate life's toughest trials with grace, and questioning my thoughts with staying present helped me and my son through a moment we’ll never forget.

Here are some questions I used during the episodes that were my lifeline.

Questions to ask yourself in a scary scenario.

What can I do right now in this moment to be safe?
Who can help me right this moment?
    call 911

Questions to ask yourself if you want to change how you are feeling and/or thinking:

    1. Is there a stress-free reason to keep this thought?
    2. Other than what I am thinking and believing, am I ok?
    3. Can I see a reason to drop this stressful thought?
    4. How do I react when I think these thoughts?

Here are the links I discussed in the podcast.

  • 24: How to Say No Without Sounding Like a B****
    Jul 9 2024

    Episode Description:
In this episode, we dive deep into the art of saying no. It's a skill many of us struggle with, often fearing that we'll come across as rude or uncaring. But learning to say no is essential for our mental and emotional well-being. Join us as we explore why we say yes when we want to say no, the pitfalls of people-pleasing, and why "no" can be the nicest word in our vocabulary.

    Key Takeaways:

    1. Why We Say Yes When We Want to Say No:
    - Seeking Approval: We often say yes because we crave approval and want to be liked. This desire can be summed up in the prayer: "God spare me from the desire for love, approval, and appreciation. Amen."
-Wanting to Be Liked: Our need to be liked can override our true feelings, leading us to agree to things we don't want to do.
    - A Desire to Be Helpful:We genuinely want to help others, but sometimes we simply can't, and saying yes anyway can lead to burnout.

    2. People Pleasing:
    - People-pleasing is a common trap that many fall into. We explore how this behavior can be detrimental to our well-being and how to break free from it.

    3. "No" is the Nicest Thing You Can Do Because It's True:
    - Saying no is often the kindest thing you can do for yourself and others. It's a way of being honest and respecting your own boundaries.

    4. Why Saying No is Great:
    - Saying no allows you to prioritize your own needs and well-being. It helps you avoid overcommitting and feeling resentful.

    5. Do You Notice Trespasses?
    - Have you allowed the gate to stay open into your yard (heart)? Within your body is your treasure. Where are people screwing with your brain?
    - We discuss the importance of recognizing when others are overstepping your boundaries and how to protect your mental and emotional space.
