Parece nacer en el norte de la península indostánica para extenderse luego por todo el país. En su época más tardía se extiende por Java e Indochina y otras zonas del Índico. Presentamos aquí una breve muestra de sus producciones más notorias y conocidas que sin duda tuvieron cierta influencia en el arte occidental a partir del renacimiento pues el comercio con los países Índicos se intensificó a partir de esas fechas.

Ya hemos afirmado en distintos capítulos que el arte gótico es el estilo de la clase burguesa de la Baja Edad Media. Sin embargo, en España no hubo una verdadera burguesía más que en Cataluña y Levante. En los reinos centrales la aristocracia y las Ordenes monásticas monopolizaron la casi totalidad de la riqueza. Sólo en el Principado de Cataluña existe una clase social de negociantes, armadores y artesanos que va tomando auge a medida que avanza la Edad Media.

La agitación socioeconómica provoca una reacción escultórica contra los estilos anteriores dando lugar a un nuevo naturalismo que busca de nuevo su inspiración en el clasicismo renacentista. Rodin es el autor más representativo de este nuevo estilo, pero hay muchos otros autores, como se puede ver en esta breve colección que ahora les presentamos.
