Dejstvie povesti proiskhodit na Kavkaze na beregu Cyornogo morya. Pervoe upominanie o zamysle, ochen' napominayushchem syuzhet "Duehli", nahoditsya eshche v pis'me Chekhova 1888 goda. Cherez neskol'ko mesyacev posle poezdki po Kavkazu, v noyabre 1888 goda Cekhov pisal A. S. Suvorinu: "Ah, kakoj ya nachal rasskaz! Pishu na temu o lyubvi. Formu izbral fel'etonno-belletristicheskuyu. Three friends, Mayer (a medical student), Rybnikov (a student of the arts), and Vassilyev (a law student), decide to go out one night to get some girls. She meets a man named Hanov, an aging man who is joyful and seemingly ignorant of the misery of life. On this journey, Marya Vassilyevna ponders her life, her happiness and the repetition of it all. When a train goes past, she sees a woman who looks much like her late mother, which fills her with joy she hasn't felt in a very long time.
