The first novel that George Sand wrote without a collaborator, this is not only a vivid romance, but also an impassioned plea for change in the inequitable French marriage laws of the time, and for a new view of women. It tells the story of a beautiful and innocent young woman, married at sixteen to a much older man. She falls in love with her handsome, frivolous neighbor, but discovers too late that his love is quite different from her own.

With his wife dead and three young children to raise, ploughman Germaine decides that the time has come to marry again. He embarks on a journey to meet a rich widow, Catherine Leonard, in a match that has been approved by his father-in-law; however, he finds her proud and vain and surrounded by other suitors. Germaine prefers the company of Marie, a young shepherdess from his own village, but she is insistent that she wants a younger, more suitable husband.

In The Marquise, Sand displays her instinctive feeling for the true sense of the "conte" or short story. She neither analyses nor explains the character of the old noblewoman who fell in love with an actor, she merely suggests the strength of passion in the cold, cynical, aged beauty. She leaves the listener's imagination vibrating with its own images thrown up by the hints she gives. A truly exceptional short story.

"The Devil's Pool" (1846) is a novel about the life of the French peasants by George Sand. Excerpt: "I knew the young man and the beautiful child; I knew their history, for they had a history. Although but a peasant and a laborer, Germain had always been aware of his duties and affections. He had related them to me clearly and ingenuously, and I had listened with interest. After some time spent in watching him plow, it occurred to me that I might write his story, though that story were as simple, as straightforward, and unadorned as the furrow he was tracing."

"Admirable texte", notait Dostoïevski dans son "Journal d'un écrivain" à propos de "La Marquise", où l'auteur "dépeint un jeune caractère féminin, droit, intègre, mais inexpérimenté, animé de cette fière chasteté qui ne se laisse pas effrayer ni ne peut être sali même par le contact avec le vice". Mariée trop tôt et mal, la Marquise reste, malgré son veuvage et sa beauté "désenchantée à jamais". "Je pris les hommes en aversion et en dégoût."

C'est en quatre jours que George Sand écrit "La mare au diable". Roman "rustique" ancré dans le Berry autour de son cher Nohant qu'elle a toujours autant de joie à faire découvrir à Frédéric Chopin. Région qu'il aime en retour, à sa façon un peu distante, parce que l'âme de la vallée noire lui parle un peu de Pologne, songe toujours entrevu, terre de son âme sempiternellement exilé !

Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin was born on the 1st July, 1804, in Paris, France, to an unconventional family who were from different classes—her father being from noble lineage whilst her mother from rather more modest origins. Her writing, a blend of romance and realism, had an effortless spontaneity which neither sacrificed style or form and tackled the complexities of politics, society, and gender.

George Sand et Victor Hugo étaient exactement contemporains et pourtant ils ne se sont jamais rencontrés. Il faudra même attendre l'année 1856 pour qu'ils entament une relation épistolaire. On connaissait depuis longtemps la magnifique correspondance entre Sand et Flaubert.
