La princesse Olga qui se targue devant ses amies de connaître Arsène Lupin qu'elle a connu sous le pseudonyme Jim Barnett, va leur raconter comment, un jour, ce détective l'a fait rentrer en possession d'un bijou brusquement envolé alors qu'elle était seule en conversation avec un soupirant Maxime Dervinol, fils d'un banquier, qui, confus de cette gênante situation, ne savait plus à quel saint se vouer.

Raoul d'Avenac, alias Arsène Lupin, rentre tard un soir du théâtre, dans une de ses garçonnières. Raoul pense à une bonne fortune mais la "gracieuse vision" ne veut pas qu'il la touche. En réalité, elle est épouvantée et c'est pour chercher refuge qu'elle s'est introduite chez lui.

Dans cette étrange aventure, Arsène Lupin va essayer de retrouver un voleur qui est caché depuis un mois sur le lieu de son crime sans que nul ne parvienne à mettre la main dessus... Le seul qui sortira vainqueur de cette péripétie ne sera pas le voleur ni le volé, mais tout simplement le gentleman cambrioleur.

Lorsqu'Arsène Lupin décide de s'attaquer au coffre-fort de Monsieur et Madame Imbert, qui est supposé contenir plusieurs millions en bijoux, titres et valeurs, il sait qu'une partie difficile s'engage. Les Imbert ne sont pas des enfants de chœur, leur hôtel particulier est un vrai château et Mme Imbert ne se sépare jamais de la clé du coffre. Cette histoire lui réservera bien des surprises.

Arsène Lupin, qui se fait appeler Guillaume Berlat, est assailli dans un train par un mystérieux voyageur, qui lui vole son argent et ses papiers. Les autorités sont persuadées que cet intrépide voleur est Arsène Lupin. Et voilà donc le vrai Arsène Lupin, aidé par la police, qui part à la recherche du faux Arsène Lupin.
