Plus que des œuvres littéraires brillantes, ce sont des portraits en creux de la société russe du XIXème siècle. Ces tableaux de mœurs nous renseignent avec talent et sagacité sur une société, des tempéraments, l'évolution d'un peuple, d'un Empire, et brosse le portrait au quotidien des hommes et des femmes, tous ces personnages qui vivent et qui peuplent ces chefs d'œuvres. La littérature en langue russe proprement dite naît au cours du XVIIème siècle, tout d'abord avec la poésie et le théâtre, mais très tôt naît une très riche tradition romanesque.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was one of the greatest writers of all time. Today he is remembered both as a brilliant playwright and one of the masters of the short story. "The Party" is a prime example of the latter.

The Darling is a short story by Russian author Anton Chekhov, first published in the No.1, 1899, issue of Semya (Family) magazine, on January 3, in Moscow. Later, Chekhov included it into Volume 9 of his Collected Works, published by Adolf Marks. The story is set on a Russian ship which is filled with ill and injured soldiers heading home after a trip to the Far East, as it follows two very different passengers aboard. One is very ill and delirious and can only envision his life on his family's farm, and is also consumed with the concern for the well-being of his family. The other is stubborn, rude and in denial of his current illness.
