Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937), better known as H. P. Lovecraft, was an American writer who achieved posthumous fame for his brilliant and highly influential works of horror fiction. Cool Air is the story of a mysterious reclusive doctor who appears to be suffering a peculiar illness which involves him cooling his rooms to extremely cold temperatures and taking strange chemical baths. Then one day the pump system which refridgerates his apartment breaks down....

"The Complete Works of H.P. Lovecraft contains all the original stories which Lovecraft wrote as an adult. It begins in 1917 with "The Tomb" and ends in 1935 with his last original work "The Haunter of the Dark." The book is ordered chronologically by the date the story was written.

"The Festival" is a short story by H. P. Lovecraft written in October 1923 and published in the January 1925 issue of Weird Tales.

"The White Ship" is a horror short story by American writer H. P. Lovecraft. It was first published in The United Amateur (Volume 19) #2, November 1919, and later appeared in the March 1927 issue of Weird Tales. Basil Elton, a lighthouse keeper, engages in a peculiar fantasy in which a bearded man in robes is piloting a mystical white ship which appears when the moon is full. The Crawling Chaos is a haunting, surreal tale born from the collaboration between H.P. Lovecraft and writer Winifred V. Jackson. First published in 1921, this story combines Lovecraft’s eerie prose with a dream that Jackson herself experienced, which served as the story’s foundation. In an interesting twist, the two writers published under pseudonyms, with Jackson as “Elizabeth Berkeley” and Lovecraft as “Lewis Theobald, Jun.”

Charles Dexter Ward is a young man from a prominent Rhode Island family who has disappeared from a mental asylum. He had been incarcerated during a prolonged period of insanity, during which he exhibited minor and inexplicable physiological changes. His empty cell is found to be very dusty. The bulk of the story concerns the investigation conducted by the Wards' family doctor, Marinus Bicknell Willett, in an attempt to discover the reason for Ward's madness and physiological changes.
