Stendhal naît à Grenoble le 23 janvier 1783. En 1800, il découvre l'Italie et surtout Milan, où il séjournera deux ans. Le choc est immédiat. C'est dans la Péninsule qu'il rencontre "son" paradis : l'Italie est réelle, vivante, terre de la beauté, de la passion, du bonheur. L'écrivain lui restera fidèle toute sa vie.
