يتلقى مؤلفو مختارات "كتاب الذعر الرهيب" دعوة للاحتفال بأحد الأعياد المقدسة، في منزل فخم بمقاطعة ليك، فيتجه فريق التحقيق شمالاً، للاجتماع بالمؤلفين، ظنًا منهم أن تكتلهم سيبقيهم بأمان.

دودي تلتقي رئيس تحرير دار نشر "ميستوفيليس وشركاه" الذي يبدو خائفًا من بعض القوى الخفية. كما تتعرف على المحرر الغامض فوكس سومز، قبل أن يشهدوا خدعًا غريبة على أرضية الاستديو الذي يؤدي فيه تيموثي عرضه التليفزيوني المباشر.

الثلوج لا تزال تتساقط على قصر سومز من الخارج، بينما المؤلفون في الداخل يتطلع بعضهم إلى بعض في حذر وشك، حتى إنهم لاحظوا أن طاقم الخدم لا يبدون طبيعيين.

فريق التحقيق الجريء، يشقون طريقهم إلى برج سكني كئيب، تعيش فيه صاحبة الاسم التالي في فهرس المختارات الأدبية "كتاب الذعر الرهيب".. تٌدعى ساندرا تمبلتون، ويكتشفون أنها أُمّ عزباء، وبينما تشعر المؤلفة بالقلق من الزيارة، يتحمس أصدقاؤها وأفراد أسرتها للقاء النجم التلفزيوني تيموثي بولد.

بعد كثير من الاكتشافات والاحتفالات الصاخبة، تعود دودي إلى منزلها القديم بصحبة كاسندرا، وتغرق في ذكريات الماضي داخل هذا المنزل الفارغ.
