Una historia de amor fantástico del creador de la Tierra Media. El relato de Beren y Lúthien era, o se convirtió, en un elemento esencial en la evolución de El Silmarillion, los mitos y leyendas de la Primera Edad del Mundo concebidos por J. R. R. Tolkien. El autor escribió el relato durante el año siguiente a su regreso de Francia y de la batalla del Somme a finales de 1916.

Wir lernen mit Bilbo Beutlin einen typischen Vertreter der Hobbits kennen, die laut Tolkien kleiner als die bösartigen Zwerge sind, dazu neigen, ein bisschen fett in der Magengegend zu werden, und außerdem (besonders nach den Mahlzeiten) tief und saftig lachen können. Dass ausgerechnet ein Anti-Held wie Bilbo - wenngleich nicht ganz freiwillig - zum Abenteurer wird, macht ihn uns erst recht sympathisch...
