"Araby" is one of the stories from Joyce's masterpiece, The Dubliners. As is the case with all the stories in the book, it culminates in an "epiphany".

Arnold Bennett was an English writer who wrote both novels and practical self-help books. One of his most famous works is How to Live on 24 Hours a Day. This book contains nine practical and often humorous essays. The titles are "Mental Efficiency", "Expressing One's Individuality", "Breaking with the Past", "Settling Down in Life", "Marriage", "Books", "Success", "The Petty Artificialities", and "The Secret of Content".

Politics is the second half of a single treatise by Aristotle (384 B.C.E - 322 B.C.E.), Ethics being the first. Both deal with one and the same subject: what Aristotle calls the philosophy of human affairs. He also refers to it as political science and social science. Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea is a classic in which Verne prophesized many modern uses of the submarine. The Warlord of Mars is the third science fiction novel in Burroughs' famous Barsoom series. The princess Dejah Thoris, John Carter's beloved wife, has been captured by a nemesis bent not only on Carter's destruction, but that of Mars, as well. A main-stay of British children's literature through the 1920's, The Water Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby was written by Rev. Charles Kinglsey as a serial for Macmillan's Magazine in 1862-63.

Although some of the author's opinions seem dated now, the journey of a little chimney-sweep water-baby through rivers and storms, under sea and over icebergs, is still a wonderful adventure tale for children. Robert Louis Stevenson, know mostly for his tales of adventure and horror, also had a humorous side. This black comedy of errors deals with a coffin that keeps disappearing, and then showing up again in very strange places.

Though written many years ago, few books have equaled this little volume in explaining how the mind is so important in the game of golf and how psychological control and techniques can improve your game as much, and perhaps more, than improved physical techniques. This is an entertaining and inspiring story about one man's "journey into fat"and how he was able to reverse that course and get back to his ideal weight. Written many years ago, it's fascinating to hear that people had the same struggles then as now with weight control and that there were just as many commercial diets and exercise plans vying for their attention - and cash. While he makes no claims about anyone else losing weight with his system, you just might.

Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American philosopher, lecturer, essayist, and poet, who is best remembered for leading the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was a a champion of individualism and wrote dozens of essays. Most criics consider "Self-Reliance" his best. It has the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's repeating themes, the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency.

James Fenimore Cooper wrote five "leather-stocking" tales. This is the second and most famous. It comes between The Deerslayer and The Pathfinder. Here the white frontiersman, Hawkeye (aka Natto Bumppo and Leather Stocking) is nobly matched with Uncas, the Indian of the title.

Henry James wrote many excellent ghost stories, his most famous being, The Turn of the Screw. In The Ghostly Rental a newcomer in town, who loves to walk for exercise, comes upon a deserted rural road. He follows the road and comes upon a house that immediately strikes him as "simply haunted." He is determined to get into the house and find out the truth about it. What he finds out turns out to be quite different than what he expected.

New England author H. P. Lovecraft was one of the key founders of modern horror. He has had a major influence on many prominent authors, including Stephen King. "The Dunwich Horror" is one of his most famous stories. It is a perfect example of one of Lovecraft's major inspirations and inventions - cosmic horror.
