About this listen

She's looking for the perfect man. He's looking for the perfect victim.

Sydney Shaw, like every single woman in New York, has terrible luck with dating. She’s seen it all: men who lie in their dating profile, men who stick her with the dinner bill, and worst of all, men who can't shut up about their mothers. But finally, she hits the jackpot.

Her new boyfriend is utterly perfect. He's charming, handsome, and works as a doctor at a local hospital. Sydney is swept off her feet.

Then the brutal murder of a young woman—the latest in a string of deaths across the coast—confounds police. The primary suspect? A mystery man who dates his victims before he kills them.

Sydney should feel safe. After all, she is dating the guy of her dreams. But she can’t shake her own suspicions that the perfect man may not be as perfect as he seems. Because someone is watching her every move, and if she doesn’t get to the truth, she’ll be the killer’s next victim...

Editorial Review

A perfect match or a perfect trap?
In this chilling thriller, readers are thrust into a heart-pounding narrative that explores the dark side of modern dating. Sydney Shaw, like many single women, has had her share of dating nightmares. But when she meets her new boyfriend—a handsome, successful doctor—things finally seem to be falling into place. The romance feels too good to be true, and as it turns out, it just might be. The backdrop of a serial killer stalking women adds a chilling dimension to the plot. The novel excels at tapping into universal fears about dating, particularly the vulnerability that comes with opening yourself up to someone new. The slow reveal of the killer’s identity is masterfully handled, with just enough red herrings to keep readers guessing until the final, heart-stopping twist. —Dawn G., Audible Editor

So obnoxious

Given how popular this author is, I was incredibly surprised by the poor quality of the writing and the character development in this book. The main character is boring, silly, and most importantly, literally never makes a good decision throughout the entire book. She could not be more frustrating. There are loose ends that never gets tied up not really, but the most annoying thing is the dialogue itself. At times it reads like a teen fiction novel. I can’t recommend this book and I’m not really sure why others have rated it so highly. It does have a pretty decent twist, but the twist doesn’t make up for the nonsense.

Sounds like the narrator from diary of a wimpy kid....still 4.5 stars!

I just finished The Boyfriend by Frieda McFadden, and it was another fun, twisty read—just like the rest of her books! The only thing is, after reading a bunch of McFadden’s books, I’ve started getting a little better at predicting her twists. I have to remind myself that if this was my first book by her, I’d probably be totally shocked! Even though I’m getting more familiar with her style, it still kept me hooked.

I listened to the audiobook version, and the narrator for the boy’s part drove me nuts. He sounded exactly like the guy from Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which I read with my son! It was super weird hearing that voice in a murder-suspense story. I really wanted a totally different vibe for this book, so that threw me off a bit. Overall, I’d give it a solid 4.5 out of 5. If it’s one of your first McFadden books, you’ll probably love it even more! Still, McFadden remains a favorite!

Amazing story!

The story and twists were great! The female narrator was great. I did not enjoy the male narrator so much.

Awesome story, I couldn’t stop listening

This was well written and well told with subtle Easter eggs and twists along the way. It’s refreshing to listen to/read a book that has twists that you DON’T see coming, I can’t remember the last time I haven’t seen the end coming from a mile away when reading a book. This was great, definitely worth listening to!

Twists and Turns! Male narrator thumbs down (spoiler example at end of review)

Big FM fan here, I use a credit to get the new reads while catching up on prior ones. Re: this story it was good, lots of twists, turns at each corner! Leaves you guessing the entire time and just when you’re certain you’ve got it figured out you’re left with more surprises! Now the cons - the male narration really discounted the experience. Esp when reading female voices. It felt really amateur - the tone was off and distracting. Last, although the overall story was good, there were a few super ridiculously silly scenarios. For example—- [SPOILER ahead] Sydney had some info about her friend Bonnie who was murdered. She knew Bonnie was dating a doctor who was super mysterious (no photos, no friend double dates) and that he used a burner phone to comms with Bonnie. Sydney’s cop ex tells her to be on high alert after her pal is murdered so when she starts dating a doctor who uses a special phone and who is wormy about meeting her friends I was immediately expecting Sydney would connect the dots. Nope. Wish FM did better development and details so the story could be somewhat believable but this point was fully ridiculous.

Definitely not her best

Unfortunately, this did not meet many marks. The suspense, the twists were predictable and as an audiobook, it fell flat. Very disappointing.
