About this listen

She's looking for the perfect man. He's looking for the perfect victim.

Sydney Shaw, like every single woman in New York, has terrible luck with dating. She’s seen it all: men who lie in their dating profile, men who stick her with the dinner bill, and worst of all, men who can't shut up about their mothers. But finally, she hits the jackpot.

Her new boyfriend is utterly perfect. He's charming, handsome, and works as a doctor at a local hospital. Sydney is swept off her feet.

Then the brutal murder of a young woman—the latest in a string of deaths across the coast—confounds police. The primary suspect? A mystery man who dates his victims before he kills them.

Sydney should feel safe. After all, she is dating the guy of her dreams. But she can’t shake her own suspicions that the perfect man may not be as perfect as he seems. Because someone is watching her every move, and if she doesn’t get to the truth, she’ll be the killer’s next victim...

Editorial Review

A perfect match or a perfect trap?
In this chilling thriller, readers are thrust into a heart-pounding narrative that explores the dark side of modern dating. Sydney Shaw, like many single women, has had her share of dating nightmares. But when she meets her new boyfriend—a handsome, successful doctor—things finally seem to be falling into place. The romance feels too good to be true, and as it turns out, it just might be. The backdrop of a serial killer stalking women adds a chilling dimension to the plot. The novel excels at tapping into universal fears about dating, particularly the vulnerability that comes with opening yourself up to someone new. The slow reveal of the killer’s identity is masterfully handled, with just enough red herrings to keep readers guessing until the final, heart-stopping twist. —Dawn G., Audible Editor

Great storyline! Terrible male narrator!

First, the male narrator is HORRIBLE! The story line however is excellent! I wish I had read this old school because its the hardest I have ever worked to stay engaged with an audiobook. Freida never disappoints but whoever chose the male narrator for the book should be fired. He’s awful.

Narrators

The narrators ruined it for me. I could barely stand listening to them. Finished bc I paid for it.

Good story

I enjoyed the storyline and the twists but the writing sounded like it was intended for a young audience.
The main character was cringy and immature , could not relate to her as a woman.
Despite this I did finish it and enjoyed the story overall

Not much

Didn’t see what all the hype was online. I mean, the book was okay at most.

Plot twist

I have read a lot of McFadden books and this by far has had to be the most annoying characters especially the main character. It reminded me when in movies the main character goes looking for the killer or falls while the killer is running after them. Like seriously constantly second guessing herself. But the ending was definitely not what I expected. Each book gives a great plot twist

Annoying

The male narrator voice as a kid is suuuper weird and annoying. Why do main characters have to be so stupid? I have a stalker...but I don't want to go through the trouble of reporting him. I know of a fake alibi but surely that doesn't matter. The guy I'm dating has given me a fake name, fake job location and is very defensive...sure that's OK! lol smh what???!!! Not realistic.

Loved it!

Freida, you did it again!!! I thought I knew where this story was heading, but I was wrong in the best way possible. From start to finish, I couldn't stop listening. I found myself guessing a million different outcomes—only to be completely surprised by the twist at the end. Another gripping masterpiece! Highly recommend if you love thrillers that keep you on your toes.

Freida is the Queen of Twists

I loved this one! I really thought I knew what the twist would be, but I didn’t! Freida does it again! I love her books because they are so quick and easy to read and always, always, always surprise me at the end!
Some people were complaining about the male narrator. I listen at 1.5 speed and I think that must have helped because I didn’t mind him at all!
4.5 stars from me!
