Herman Melville, potentially one of America’s most important novelists, wrote White Jacket (published in 1850) based on his experiences serving the US Navy aboard the frigate USS Neversink from 1843 to 1844. White Jacket is considered to be Melville’s most politically charged novel due to its severe criticism of the US Navy and its policies at the time. In fact, the novel helped bring about the end of flogging aboard Naval ships (then a standard practice) due to its graphic and brutal descriptions of the floggings Melville himself witnessed.

Initially dismissed as "a dead failure" and "a bad book," and declined by Melville's British publisher, "Pierre" has since struck critics as modern in its psychological probings and literary technique fit, as Carl Van Vechten said in 1922, to be ranked with "The Golden Bowl", "Women in Love", and "Ulysses". None of Melville's other "secondary" works has so regularly been acknowledged by its most thorough critics as a work of genuine grandeur, however flawed.

Así comienza esta famosa obra que narra la travesía del barco ballenero Pequod, comandado por el capitán Ahab, junto a Ismael - quien narra la historia- y el arponero Quiqueg, en la mítica persecución de la gran ballena blanca. Narra la historia de Bartleby, el escribiente, contada a través de un abogado de nombre desconocido que tiene su oficina en Wall Street. Tiene tres empleados, apodados Turkey («Pavo»), Nippers («Pinzas») y Ginger Nut («Bizcocho de jengibre»). Turkey y Nippers son copistas, o escribientes; Ginger Nut, de apenas doce años, es el chico de los recados. Como los dos escribientes no son suficientes para hacer el trabajo de la oficina, el narrador pone un anuncio para contratar un nuevo empleado. Bartleby se presenta y es contratado de inmediato.

La lucha de un hombre obstinado contra una ballena Moby Dick es considerado por la critica como una de las novelas mas importantes de la literatura universal ya que aunque aparentemente es la simple historia de un marinero obsesionado por cazar una elusiva ballena, es un inmenso poema lirico que tiene como fondo el ansia de triunfo de todo ser humano.

Herman Melville wrote the 1855 novella Benito Cereno, a story about a revolt on a slaver ship, the San Dominick, off the coast of Chile in 1799. It is an adventure story which highlights the cruelty of slavery and the hopeless desperation that slaves experience. The tale begins when Captain Delano of the whaling ship Bachelor's Delight spots another ship approaching, floating listlessly with torn sails.

Written as an introductory story to The Piazza Tales, the protagonist of The Piazza idealizes a radiant spot on the mountain that he looks upon from his piazza. Traveling to the spot he realizes it is a house, occupied by the unhappy girl Marianna, who longs to see the lucky individual who lives in the white house she looks upon from her window. The narrator realizes he has been the object of a fantasy like his own, and leaves thinking how all idealism is an illusion.

Herman Melville was born in New York City on 1st August 1819. His father died when he was 12, leaving the family in very straitened times. Two years later Melville took a job in a bank and followed up with a failed stint as a surveyor. He went to sea and travelled across to Liverpool and then to the Pacific on adventures. Presented here is perhaps his best known short story, ‘Bartleby, the Scrivener’, an enduring story of a Wall Street lawyer and his very particular assistant.
