The plot focuses on the adventures of five Americans on an uncharted island in the South Pacific. During the American Civil War, five northern prisoners of war decide to escape, during the siege of Richmond, Virginia, by hijacking a balloon. During their stay on the island, the group endures bad weather, and domesticates an orangutan, Jupiter. There is a mystery on the island in the form of an unseen deus ex machina, responsible for Cyrus' survival after falling from the balloon, the mysterious rescue of Top from a dugong, the appearance of a box of equipment (guns and ammunition, tools, etc.).

"Michael Strogoff" is the 14th novel in Jules Verne's Extraordinary Voyages cycle, his largest and most influential body of published work. Mysterious entities take possession of a long deserted castle creating fear among the residents of the adjacent village of Werst, in Transylvania. The village sends two men to the castle to investigate, but they are repulsed by what the men feel are "supernatural" means. The heroes of the story, Count Franz de Telek and his man Rotzko learn of the mystery while passing through the village and become determined to solve it.

Así, la novela relata el viaje de Fogg y su ayudante francés, Jean Passepartout, y abarca las peripecias y un sinfín de problemas y contratiempos que tienen que afrontar.
