Schwer und klobig stand der Sarg im Keller. Ein Silbersarg war es, der sogar einen Namen hatte. Man nannte ihn den "Sarg der tausend Tode", und das hatte seinen guten Grund, denn wer in diesen Totenbehälter geriet, nahm ein grauenvolles Ende, starb tausend Tode. Es war eine Falle, innen gespickt mit langen, silbernen Stacheln. Metal, der Silberdämon, hatte ihn zurückgelassen. Und in dieser Nacht wurde der Sarg der tausend Tode wieder aktiv.

In der Nähe von Honkong verschwinden in der sogenannten Höllenbucht immer wieder Menschen. Fritz Baymer, ein Freund Tucker Peckinpahs, bittet Tony Ballard um Hilfe, denn auch sein Sohn und dessen Freundin zählen zu den Vermissten. In der Bucht angekommen, gesellt sich ein mysteriöser Mann zu Tony und Silver, der sich Daryl Crenna nennt. Ehe die drei sich versehen, finden sie sich in Protoc, der Welt der Pavian-Dämonen, wieder. Dort treffen sie nicht nur auf die mörderischen Affenbestien, sondern auch auf Metal, einen Silberdämon, der auf der Seite der Hölle steht, und dessen Partnerin, die dunkle Hexe Arma.

Er war ein Instrument der Hölle, ein schwarzmagischer Gegenstand des Bösen und er hatte schon viele Lebewesen auf dem Gewissen: der Sarg der tausend Tode. Der mörderische Sarg, der wie eine eiserne Jungfrau mit tödlichen Stacheln ausgestattet war und mit dunkler Magie nicht einfach nur zum Tode führte, sondern, wie es sein Name umschrieb, tausend Tode sterben ließ, sollte dem Ballard-Team zum Verhängnis werden.

Tony Ballard steckt in der Klemme - allein gegen Nimu Brass, dessen Piraten, die besessenen Jugendlichen und einen seiner größten Gegner hat er kaum eine Chance zu überleben. Cruv und Roxane gehen weiter den gefährlichen Weg durch Coor und begegnen dabei Höllenhunden, Zentauren und einem Drachen, der Mr. Silver zum Verhängnis wird. Gleichzeitig steht das restliche Ballard-Team in Cullkirk tatenlos dem Siegeszug der Zombie-Piraten entgegen, an dessen Ende auf das Ballard-Team ein großer Schicksalsschlag wartet.

Roxane erhält einen Hilferuf von ihrer Hexenschwester Oda. Mit dieser hatte sie von der dunklen Seite zur guten gewechselt und war mit ihr vor Mago, dem Jäger der abtrünnigen Hexen, auf der Flucht. Oda konnte Mago nur mit der Hilfe der beiden Schatzjäger Ian Ekenberry und Bruce Perkins entkommen. Doch nun schweben alle drei in Lebensgefahr. Roxane, Mr. Silver und Tony Ballard eilen zu Hilfe. Doch plötzlich ist Mr. Silver außer Gefecht, Tony Gefangener von Magos Schergen und die beiden Hexenschwestern sollen ihr Leben auf Magos Scheiterhaufen aushauchen.

Für Cruv und Roxane spitzt sich die Lage auf "Coor" gegen den Mord-Magier und dessen teuflische Schlange gefährlich zu. Unterdessen kämpft das restliche Ballard-Team auf dem Meer vor der Küste Cullkirks eine mörderische Schlacht mit den Untoten Piraten. Als dann Mr. Silver auch noch entführt wird und die Jugendlichen dem Lockruf der Zombies verfallen, wird die Situation auch hier immer brenzliger.
