Mackenzie—Mack—Owens was supposed to live out every millennial’s dream, but instead it turned into a nightmare. An explosion in St. Albinus rocks more than just the town centre when the victim turns out to be someone from Maggie’s past. Mack pretty quickly decides the two of them have to find the killer, because the victim had a lot of skeletons in his closet—literally —and it’s going to take someone who was around back in the day to get to the bottom of this. Meanwhile, someone around town is spreading rumours about Mack, and she’s pretty sure she knows who’s behind them. And how come Aksel seems to magically be involved in every case Mack decides to investigate?

And worse, a threatening message on the body indicates this might not be the killer's last victim. Deciding that solving this crime is her key to making a name for herself in town—for a good reason, for once—Mack immediately decides she’s going to figure out who killed the artist. But, she very quickly discovers that the victim had a lot more than watercolors on his palette.

When one of Ada’s coworkers is found dead on the beach, and a friend of Ada’s is almost immediately arrested, she knows there’s something wrong. There’s no way her friend did this, and Mack immediately jumps in to help. Together, they have to prove Ada’s friend’s innocence before it’s too late.
