In The Witcher universe, humans, dwarves, gnomes and elves had lived together peacefully for more than a century. But times have changed and unrest is rampant. As the threat of war looms large, Geralt roams the land looking for assignments — never losing sight of his mission to protect the child of destiny. On his journey, Geralt realises that although some of his quarry are unremittingly vile, others are simply the victims of sin, evil or naivety.

The Witcher made its first appearance as a series of short stories in Polish science fiction and fantasy magazine Fantastyka in the mid-1980s. In the ensuing novel series, writer Andrzej Sapkowski expanded on The Witcher’s medieval fantasy world inspired by Slavic mythology. Sapkowski created an original language for the series known as Elder Speech, loosely based on Welsh, English, French, Irish, Latin and other languages.
