About this listen

Laird Ruairi Sutherland refuses to send his only son away to be educated by the English. And he most definitely will not appear in Edinburgh to pay homage to a liege who has no respect for Scotland. So he does what any laird would do - he lies to the king. The last thing Ruairi expects is a beautiful English governess to appear on his doorstep.

Lady Ravenna Walsingham is a seasoned spy who is sent to the savage Highlands to uncover a nefarious plot against the Crown. Playing the part of an English governess - a job easier said than done - she infiltrates the home of Laird Sutherland, a suspected conspirator.

Contains mature themes.

This story was spellbinding. I love romantic historical stories which make reference to the actual history like this one does. Anyone who knows English history is familiar with the names Walsingham, James I, Orkney, etc. By referring to real people it makes the story come alive. It’s hard to believe how old spy craft is but there were spy’s in ancient times in Egypt, Babylon, Mesopotamia, etc. It is considered the second oldest profession in the world. (We all know what the oldest one is professed to be.) The heroine is a spy for the crown. It is actually her family’s traditional work! Little did she know that she would have the tables turned on her and start to feel something for the people on which she spied. The hero, a Scottish laird, is just living his ever busy life making decisions for his clan, raising his son and being a widower. He accepts the gift of a governess from the king because you don’t look gifts from the king in the mouth as it were. The story takes off from there. And not only is the story well written but the characters are well drawn and tight and you admire the ones you’re supposed to and dislike the ones you should. Which is good because you will meet these people again if you read or listen to the two subsequent books. As always, the ending is happy but it is the getting there that is the fun. Ms. Eyre continues to improve in her performance and, for the most part, is no longer asking questions with each sentence.

Excellent!

It was impossible to listen to the “Irish” accent being used by the Scots. It was just too distracting to finish.

Performance Was Distracting

Lady Ravenna is an enjoyable character, and I liked the way the story starts off. Since I do not like to give spoilers, I won't say anymore about the book accept you will enjoy it if you can get past Justine Eyre. Her voices for men are horrible. I don't know if I will listen to Book 2 about Grace because in Book 1 her character was very annoying. Will I be able to complete the book listening to her attitude and Justine Eyre's voice.

Nice Story, But Not Sizzling

Great story! You were able to get to know all the characters and their personalities. Narrator was good too. She did well with the different languages. On to the next book in the series! Enjoy!

Didn’t want this story to end!

I liked it and it had some fun moments and romance...but I didn't LOVE it. Justine Eyre was terrific...as usual. I will probably go ahead and read the next book about Grace...although I found her character irritating. If you can get on sale...or in the romance package..as I did. Romance package is worth it! Let's you take risks on new narrators and authors.

Ok.

This book had a good plot and likable characters. The passion element was lacking in my opinion. The bedroom scenes were not even a minute long with no foreplay. So if you’re looking for a “sizzling“ novel as it is advertised, you’ll be disappointed.

Good plot but Not sizzling

I usually go for time travel historical romance, but this was different, not to bad.

First-time for a twist of spy and romance
