Publisher's summary

Come forth with an open mind, for an unconventional tale of love....

Dublin native Freda Wilson considers herself to be an acquired taste. She has a habit of making offensive jokes and speaking her mind too often. She doesn't have the best track record with first impressions, which is why she gets a surprise when her new neighbor, Nicholas, takes a shine to her. Nicholas is darkly handsome, funny, and magnetic, and Freda feels like her black and white existence is plunged into a rainbow of color when she's around him. When he walks into a room he lights it up, with his quick wit and charisma. He is a travelling cabaret performer, but Freda doesn't know exactly what that entails until the curtains pull back on his opening night. She is gob-smacked and entirely intrigued to see him take to the stage in drag. Later on, Nicholas asks her if she would like to become his show assistant. Excited by the idea, she jumps at the chance. Soon she finds herself immersed in a world of wigs, make up, and high heels, surrounded by pretty men and the temptation of falling for her incredibly beautiful employer. In this story of passion and sexual discovery, Nicholas and Freda will contend with jealousy, emotional highs and lows, and the kind of love that only comes around once in a lifetime.

I wasn't ready for it to end.

This unconventional love story had a realistic storyline that kept me wanting more. I love that this is not a story of instalove found in most romance book it was a story of attraction that leads to more. The witty and sexy banter makes the pairing believable I really liked and felt the relationship develop. After it ended I had to know if there was more to this story. There is more and I hope that it comes out in audiobook soon. (I just don't have the time it takes to read)

Freda and Nicholas

A beautiful, touching story that deals with emotive subjects such as self-image and addiction.
I don't think the narrator was suited to the subject matter though - too quirky and light-hearted at times, when the mood was anything but.

My First LH Cosway Story

I was so happy to see this on Audible, as it was the first book by LH Cosway that I read. SO unique and well done that I rushed to "follow" her (I assume it's a "her"!) so I didn't miss out on anything else she had written. I've since devoured all of her works and have never been disappointed.

I wish that more of Cosway's stories were on Audible! I'd definitely snap them up. As I said, so unique and well done. No cookie-cutter romance here!

My only complaint is the narrator. Viv / Nicholas is suppose to be from New Zealand but there was not even a _hint_ of a New Zealand accent. And so much of the story was pretty much just read to us in a monotone. Very disappointing.

Bad narrator notwithstanding ... highly recommended!

ok but not much plot

The characters were interesting and I loved the voice of the narrator but there just wasn't a whole lot of plot. Still worth a read for the quirky banter though.

Beautiful and unique love story, an instant favorite!

I was new to LH Cosway when I read this book and I was blown away! I am huge fan of slow burn type of books and this one definitely simmered and had lots of fun along the way. You grow to love and care about the characters and I loved the unique premise! At first I felt Ali Coffey's voice was a little too old sounding but her performance was so good it didn't end up affecting my enjoyment of the book. I enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone especially romance lovers.

Unconventional, Amazing Love Story

Painted Faces is an amazing love story! So different and quirky. The heroine is Fred (Freda), a bit awkward but outspoken. The hero is Viv (Nicholas) her good looking and sexy drag queen neighbor. The story was a beautiful song that sang to me right from the heartbreaking prologue.
I couldn't put the book down and ignored my family and home (and sleep) to finish.
I listened to the audiobook for some of the story. At first I was surprised by the unusual, sort of fast sound of the narrator's voice. But as I listened I realized how much she had taken on the fun and quirky personality of Fred and that was what was coming through in the narration. I fell in love with Fred and swooned for my first drag queen crush, Viv!!

"I love him because he makes me laugh when I don't feel like laughing. I love him because he challenges my view of what a man is. I love him because I know I shouldn't love him and that he'll break my heart. I love him because he's a complete and total anomaly. I love him because I want to kill the sadness inside him more than I want anything else in the world."

Spectacular!

Amazing! Can’t miss!
I never would have known about this book until I attended a book chat with Julia Kent and Penny Reid, 2 of my favourite authors (on Zoom, during quarantine of course). Penny and LH Cosway co-wrote a book series together (about Rugby players) that I enjoyed, and Penny and Julia had talked about how great this book was and how important it was in the Romance genre. I had to check it out. WOW! This book is incredible! A must read for everyone, especially if you love Irish accents! Fred and Viv’s story is just so special ❤️
