Publisher's summary

Damon Al-Kendras knows how to handle his sword. After years of performing as a gladiator across the cities of Veridan’s Curve, he’s returning home under dangerous circumstances, to the farm on which he and his fellow orphans were raised.

Velanor, the precocious blonde socialite. Ria, exotic and sexy, a natural born tempest mage. Both are now grown women, and so much has changed since their intimate childhood under one roof. But Malon, their guardian and protector, is still as beautiful and mysterious as ever.

With conflict on the horizon, it’s up to Damon to protect them, to love them, and to figure out just where the boundaries are. Ten years is a long time to be away from a home filled with buxom, confident women.

This book contains forbidden, consensual sexual encounters between the main character and the closest women in his life.

Holy Schneikies!!

This is yet another book that scratched an itch I didn’t know I had!

Damon Al-Kendras is an accomplished swordsman. Better than most people he encounters. He’s a little weak-willed in the beginning, until he is forced to do the unthinkable, an act that slowly begins to change who he is and what he’s willing to do to protect those he loves.

The book is well-written and well-narrated. Lana Lee does a great job of distinguishing characters. The sex is plentiful, descriptive, and deliciously frustrating at times. You’ll see what I mean when you listen to it.

Highly recommend. So much so that I just bought the available sequels outright, something I never do.

Some good ear candy

While the story is a bit muddy as to what direction it wants to go; the characters are actually pretty well developed. This book seems to have set the stage for the world and plot so I guess I have to read more.

If you couldn't tell by the cover art, this is some pretty smutty stuff.

Interesting, but could've used some polish

Overall the book was good. I enjoyed it.

I do think that there were things that could have been better explained or possibly written a bit differently. A good example would be the tribes of Elves. I had thought they were something similar to Tritons or something until their ears were pointed out.

Narration: It was good. Lana did a wonderful job. However, I do think that it could have been more if it had been Duel Narration. The variation of character voices just felt a wee bit limited.

This book is crazy!

I have to say, this book is NOTHING like I’ve expected! Anya Merchant is dope! This book is great on so many levels.

But I don’t understand some of her Good Reads reviews. Some of them didn’t seem to understand that Ms. Merchant’s books tell you it’s going to have “taboo” consensual sexual relationships/encounters. Like they didn’t read the book blurb in bold black ink! Some felt that the pacing was slow, and even others thought that she didn’t explain her magic or world well.

I disagree with almost all of this. I don’t find these relationships “taboo” per say, as none of the women are of blood or marital relation to the MC. They’re what I call a “Found Family”. As a child, you will less likely find the person who raises you— mother, father, or facsimile of various guardians, as sexually attractive. As the MC is involved with women who are all of no blood relation, but of communal involvement, I can fully understand how these relationships can change with time.

What’s really “Taboo” about getting sexually involved with girls you knew when you were younger? Both girls are of age in the books world. An age limit is discussed early in the book, FYI. The girls, though raised under the same roof, are ALL ORPHANS. The true “taboo” is strictly societal in nature.

His “Aesta” is a guardian, for him and both girls, but again of no relation by blood or marriage. The age difference and their previous power dynamics may bring in the “taboo” thought process. However, that is again by societal norms. In the Bible, if a married woman is left a widow, especially if without children, her brother-in-law is supposed to take her to wife. In our current societal environment that would be looked upon as “indecent” at the least. And if no one has figured this out yet, let me make something else clear.

THIS IS WORLD BUILDING!

These particular things set up some of the mores of the world. As for the magic, we’re introduced to four individual types of magic. But currently they lean towards the center of the Soft/Hard spectrum popularized by Brandon Sanderson. We know what empowers the wielders, what can weaken them in one particular system’s case, and what triggers a particular bit of magic on a particular item. We have been given a glimpse into the possibilities, consequences of using, and limitations of these magics. The Magic system is designed solidly.

Again, this is all good world building!

As for the character development and each person’s personality, I see it as well done and fleshed out better than a lot of stories. The MC is a bit naive at the beginning. His skill with a sword was never in question, despite many feeling he got beat up too much. He didn’t get beat for lack of skill, in my opinion, but because of his insistence on being non lethal in his approach. His lack of real life lethal combat made his decision and reactions to trouble poor. This is corrected by the end of the book in a rather natural manner.

The women in his life are all very different and engaging. Someone made comment in a review that the MC is a “beta simp” and gets saved by the women all of the time. If you’re here for “The Hero’s Journey”, you’ll be disappointed. EVERY TIME the MC is alone, he is in desperately mortal danger. The story and the series, I presume, is more of a “Heroine’s Journey” where his network of friends will stay involved in the situations he finds himself in. He will have solo outings, but his ladies will surely show that they’re more than pretty faces and hot bodies to lust behind.

This is premium world building. A solid start to a series. Lana Lee’s voice can sound so good it’s like warm milk to the non lactose intolerant. I can listen to her read the dictionary and still be good.

As for the sex scenes, I enjoyed them. I won’t gush over them not because they don’t deserve to be talked about, but because this is a matter of taste. I like assertive women. I like intelligent women. I also like when women want to be around me for me. The MC has that all in spades with these three women. Is it a fantasy? Sure, but that’s what we all came here for, yes?

I love this first book. I ran across it by happenstance. The cover art is… okay. The artist is probably the only hit or miss I’ve seen so far. And he’s far from awful. If anything, I gather budgets or networks prevent better cover art. Again, better doesn’t mean that the art is bad. I can just imagine better for Ms. Merchant’s covers. But that’s a personal quibble.

Well worth my time. Worth every penny!

Honestly pretty dang good

We all know why you’re reading this review and checking out this book so I’ll start with what you want dear reader;

The smut:
Fantastic and unique. Several situations present themselves in uncommon ways with varied and engaging outcomes/consequences. Believe it or not the author handles the subject matter in the most thoughtful way I’ve ever seen in this genre so far. Most of the time you get the average “sees hot woman, they fall in love, they go at it within three days or less” or “x relation sees how much they’ve grown and immediately shows interest/ bedtime frolic within a few weeks. Some of the build up happens over weeks of in world time explained with small very reasonable time skips. It’s just such a great build up especially in how it varies from woman to woman. Add on a healthy amount of introspection before, during, and after and you’ve got a recipe for engaging and more realistic “engagements” with the topic at hand.

The performance:
Not a single complaint. Lana did absolutely excellent at tone shift and voice differentiation between narration, the main cast, and the interesting NPC’s so to speak. Characters did have their own timber and accent and to the experienced listener, it was more than good enough to tell who was speaking and when even before the acknowledgment of the text.

Story:
Absolutely a page Turner or minutiae listener as it may go for audio listeners like myself. I gotta say they kept adventure, mystery, twists and a mountain of well executed tension throughout the story. No spoilers here but I’ll say there were a few moments in the last chapter that did something few books EVER have; made me drop my jaw figuratively and once literally with the sudden twists. Astounding how hard it is to find a book and story that can pull it off so well.

Final:
It has the rating I gave it for a reason. I’ll be getting the sequels soon enough when I can and can only hope they maintain their quality. Worth the extra price or audible credit to attain the audio.

Domestic decay

This book was absolutely amazing. I love the book series that miss Anya puts out. From the modern hero dystopian of domestic decay to the fantasy medieval of sin and soil. It’s all great stuff and can’t wait till more books come out on audiobook
