About this listen

Slutever is a call-to-arms, a confessional memoir, and a slut manifesto—and it's all thanks to a sex-radical hedonist in a pink PVC mini dress.

"Slut" is a great word. It just sounds perfect—so sharp and clear and beautiful. It's one of those satisfying four letter words, like c--t and f--k. Slut also happens to be an anagram for lust, which is one of those divine coincidences that makes you wonder if God actually exists.

We're lucky that slut is such a great word, because it's safe to say that almost every woman will be called a slut at least once in her lifetime. Despite a slowly shifting sexual double standard, it's still taboo to be a woman who's openly sexual—let alone one who sleeps around. Now Vogue columnist Karley Sciortino is on a mission to reclaim the word "slut" to represent a person who seeks out visceral experiences through sex, and who isn't ashamed about it. Sluts are special. Sluts are radical. And sluts are skilled at time management, because they can handle multiple partners on rotation, plus their jobs and their blogs and their beauty routines. Not everyone is qualified for this coveted position.

Slutever is a thoughtful, first-person account of a modern woman, navigating sex, love, casual hookups, open relationships, bisexuality, BDSM, breakups, sex work, sex parties, and the power of sexual agency, as told from the front lines.

Critic reviews

"Slutever is a funny, surprising, and ultimately enlightening book. Karley Sciortino is a natural-born killer of outmoded ways of thinking about love, sex, and personal agency. Generation slut has found a thoughtful, articulate voice." (Christopher Ryan, PhD, coauthor of Sex at Dawn: How We Mate, Why We Stray, and What It Means for Modern Relationships)

"Karley is the mad aunt every proto-slut should have. Hilarious and informative. I genuinely wish I'd had this book when I was a teen. I suspect it would have helped me make sense of the world and myself a lot faster." (Stoya, pornographer)

If you could sum up Slutever in three words, what would they be?

Sluts are everywhere.

Who was your favorite character and why?

KARLEY

What about Karley Sciortino’s performance did you like?

I was really interested in Karley's story and each life moment she mentioned beckoned me to want to know more and more.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Overall her confident and curious personality.

Any additional comments?

I was so taken by Karley's story I gave this 5 stars. I not in her age bracket and was a bit distracted by the the upward question asking tone during a lot of her reading but, I still loved this book. Would love to see more SLUTEVER books in the next 3 or 5 years. Shameless promote on her television here -- love that also. You rock Karley!

I had fun reading this book, I liked how Karley speaks so candidly about her life. I don't agree with all of her opinions, but she doesn't claim to be an authority, just someone who enjoys living her (sex) life on her on terms. Narration is well executed.

I really loved this book. The first chapter is her "manifesto", and while I agreed with what she was saying, I got a little bored so I skipped ahead to chapter one. This starts a more conventional narrative where she relates antidotes from her past experiences and then relates them to her overall view of her sexuality.

This is what I liked about the tone of her writing. She stays humble and does not come off like she knows it all and everyone is beneath her. At the same time she doesn't wallow in "poor me". She presents each encounter as it is and recognizes her part in what happed and then moves on.

She is also highly intelligent and well read. She is able to provide context and explanation to her various sexual encounters and life choices that makes logical sense. Many times she will say when she feels she simply made bad decisions and explain why.

The book offers a fresh original take on modern female sexuality that is well written by a likable author.

I laughed a lot listening to this book. I loved how honest Karley was. This is definitely not your book if you have an issue with swearing or graphic discussion of personal matters. There was even a moment for me where I almost threw up a bit in my mouth. You would think that was a bad thing but if a book can cause that sort of reaction it's a good book in my opinion.

Of course, since I've gotten older there is a part of me that knows many of the experiences the author shared put her in dangerous situations. I'm glad she made it to this point.

I think any woman over the age of 25 should consider this book mandatory reading.

Honest and hilarious
