Book is awesome, issues with the reader’s vocal choices

The reader goes into a high fake/falsetto voice when reading a feminine perspective which feels really offensive, demeaning to me as a female. I am probably halfway through but may not finish the audio version of the book because it bothers me so much.

The book itself I really appreciate, for depathologizing erotic fantasies and giving a set a of and trajectory for how to work with them; encouraging a way to use fantasies for healing - not use fantasies for coping but rather to use them for self-understanding, so one can operate more effectively and intelligently in the world. I like the definition of healing as becoming more of yourself, rather than fixing yourself.

distracting narrator

I love the book, but when narrator reads women's dialogue he changes his voice and it's unbearable.

extremely helpful!

very well written and helpful. I'm already using the many tools described here with my partner for deeper healing and exploration. in the one month since i started listening to this book, with self reflection and journaling, I was able to uncover and articulate my behaviour patterns that were preventing me from having deeper more fulfilling relationships.

I've been recommending this book to all my friends!

Revealing

I found this book to be very open to all types of lifestyles. It really helps to define where some of our sexual desires, habits, fantasies can come from and what they are truly acting out. Very thought-provoking.

Read with your partner

My wife and I read this together and it's well laid out and engaging. The author has some interesting theories about our fantasies, their origins, meanings and importance they have in living a fulfilled sexual life. Powerful for sure. We also had a physical copy as the audio book was not super clear on where the exercises were and having the physical book helped clear that up.

Horrible Narrator

I’ve listened to at least 100 audiobooks and this narrator is the worst yet. When he is reading the body of the text he is so slow that you have to listen on a faster speed to make it bearable. The main problem is that when he reads quotations from patients, and there are a lot of them, he attempts to give them distinctive voices, as if he were reading dialogue in a novel. His attempt to read in women’s voices is downright ridiculous. Even when reading passages written by the female author, he adopts an insipid tone, as if all women are shy and furtive and lack confidence. I’m a man and therefore not personally insulted, but it is curious how a professional performer could be so clueless about how real women sound.

The book itself is a decent introduction to the psychology of sexual desire. The author relies too much on quotations from his patients. Paraphrasing would be more effective and efficient, making the over-use of quotations seem like an attempt to pad out the book.

There could have been a lot more analysis. Some of the explanations about why people develop certain fetishes or interests rely too much on generalizations. But overall the content of the book is interesting, and it presents some good ideas about how to discover the true meaning of our sexual desires.
