Existing within a virtual world shared across millions of users while they sleep, the online game, Carpe Noctem, offers a life of magic and adventure. For a scruffy gunslinger like Max, and a snarky fairy like Kira, it’s home. Unfortunately, Noctem’s creator, and unhinged genius, has been fired. On his way out, he slapped a doomsday button to bring the system crashing down and send the global economy into ruin. To save their second home, Max and Kira will need to assemble a party of misfits to conquer a quest of nightmares, and discover the secrets that lurk within the game.

Fascinating base idea for a lit rpg. Books 1 and 3 are my favorite. Book 2 was still fun, but not quite as good.
Im really excited for more.

Not for me.
Reviewed: 07-20-23
The world is very engaging and beautiful, all the supporting characters are brilliant and interesting. However none of that matters in light of the main character being unable to bring them together to make an enjoyable story, at least for me. Three books in and I decided this series is not for me. I got more headaches than enjoyment.

Definitely not the best in the series.

A bit hard to listen to. Lots of unnecessary reiterations and reminders of character past, too many unnecessary details. This storyline didn't deserve an entire book. Not all bad but much more bad than good.

Felt like someone trying to fill a word count by continuing to repeat already established information. Loved the previous books, this one left me wanting.

Story
A floating fortress occupied by warrior gnomes. A castle made of sand. A derelict submarine guarded by malfunctioning machines. A haunted crypt surrounded by lethal traps. It was supposed to be easy. One bubble. Four castles. Fifteen days. Capture each one, and the stairwell is unlocked. Here's the thing. It's never easy. Carl and his team can't go it alone. Not this time. They must rely on the help of the low-level, I-can't-believe-these-idiots-are-still-alive crawlers trapped in the bubble with them. But can they be trusted?

Matt keep's upping his game in this series. I loved books 1 and 2, but devoured book 3 in a weekend because I needed more. Book 4 I was able to pace myself a bit more, mostly through willpower and family events during the holidays.
But I have to say book 4 is amazing.
I wont spoil anything, but if you have read the first 3 books, lets say that Matt turns the dial to 11 on the AI, Borant's shenanigans, and Carl being a fantastic main character.
For a character that wont be broken, I love how broken he is.

The top 10 list is populated. The sponsorship program is open. The difficulty is ramping up. The first three floors were nothing compared to what Carl and Donut now face. The Iron Tangle. An impossibly complicated subway system built out of the world's subterranean railway systems, all combined and then tied together into a knot. Up is down.

Matt and Jeff bring the third of the Dungeon Crawler Carl books to life here.
Carl gets more depth and some fun new toys. Donut is even more entertaining than normal with a few fantastic episodes.
I love this series more and more as I read it.
While I'd probably die before even getting into the dungeon, if the earth had to be destroyed, this is at least an interesting way to go.

The ratings and views are off the chart. The fans just can't get enough. The dungeon gets more dangerous each day. But in a grinder designed to chew up and spit out crawlers by the millions, Carl and Princess Donut need to work harder than ever just to survive. They call it the Over City. A sprawling, once-thriving metropolis devastated by a mysterious calamity. But these streets are far from abandoned. An undead circus trawls the ruins. Murdered prostitutes rain from the sky. An ancient spell is finally ready to reveal its dark purpose.

The sequel to Dungeon Crawler Carl is amazing. Jeff really brings this book to life.
Matt already did a fantastic job with writing the book, and Jeff brings it to a new form.
I love Matt's writing ability. He brings exciting multi-tiered stories with plots inside of plots and great characters. My favorite thing is having fun characters that have more and more depth exposed on them as time goes by.
Btw, I totally want a full sound booth theater deep dive on this series. With sound effects, multiple voices, and music in the background. I would totally pay more for that.
