a worthy conclusion
Reviewed: 07-22-24
this series has been a journey, highs and lows of the characters and parts of the story bur has always been one that I instantly stop to read when a new book comes out. there was a point a few books ago I thought the series was writing itself into a corner that there would be no way out. the last second to last book I felt was a bit of a struggle but also I could see the author fighting himself out of the corner. the pace of the book was great nothing felt rushed. it ended the main story well and the epilogue gave a good send off to everyone. literally a feeling of peace and self reflection for the characters. the last 3 or 4 books had been so heavy for them I doubt anyone could mentally be sane. in closing thank you this Cycle and all of its books. well done Ed

Story
Destroying the portals between worlds was supposed to force the entity out of Rale. Instead, it's trapped him there. This has cut Nolost off from much of his power, buying some time to try to stop him from annihilating the world. Dante and Blays' last hope lies in finding someone or something called the Burdan rah Saylan. Knowing nothing about the Burdan except for their name, they travel far to the east into lands they've never heard of.

The galaxy is doomed. Monkeys may be clever and too stubborn to give up, but Skippy The Idiot Who Got Played knows the harsh truth: this is a fight he can’t win. The odds are not only stacked against him, he was designed not to win this fight. Maybe he can salvage some faint memory of the civilizations that inhabit the galaxy, but those beings are doomed. Doomed. Including the Merry Band of Pirates.

It has been a journey

15 books over the last few years is a feat in itself. The content kept coming and it did slow in some books.
This book was similar lots discussion vs action. the fun humor remained but everything seemed a bit fast a bit to clean. I felt he didn't know how to end it and just kinda made it end. Almost 20 hours of book and the end finished up in less than hour and it wasn't a climatic build up to that hour.
I can see another book or perhaps another spin off. I'm conflicted I want more but I don't at the same time.
thanks for the journey

Dante, Blays, and Gladdic's final effort to defeat him has failed. Within weeks—if not days—Rale will be destroyed. One last hope remains. They can't kill Nolost, but they may be able to eject him from Rale before he can complete his work. To do so, though, they'll have to destroy a world themselves: Olastar, the home of the portals that link all other places together.

I've been listening to this series for almost 7 years. it does not get old. this book continued to expand on some ideas not fleshed out in previous books and at the same time kept a smaller bank of characters. can they really save the world? is a theme throughout, and what happens If they do? great book for me and amazing narration as always.

9 books in and still has juice
Reviewed: 07-18-22
When a series gets past the trilogy phase the story tends to wane a bit. however NSS continues to create an attention grabbing story. opening new doors and hell creating new beast/dangers for the characters to encounter. book 9 I felt at one point I felt was setting up for a prequel spin off of a character but ended with the story of the main characters ready for book 10. and now I wait thanks NSS
of course RC Bray continues to be one of the best narrators in the biz.

The problem with lying about having a super weapon is that the bad guys might believe they have nothing to lose by doing something stupid that both sides will regret. Or, they might just call your bluff. Either way, the Merry Band of Pirates need a plan to deal with the Fallout.

Story
For thousands of years, there has been a cycle: a Demon King rises and conquers, and a Hero is reborn a hundred years later to defeat him. Each time, civilizations are ground to dust beneath the Demon King's hordes, but humanity has remained secure in the belief that a Hero of legend will always save them. There's just one slight problem. It's only been 23 years since the Demon King's latest rise, and this time, he's already conquered more than half the world. If humanity simply waits for the Hero's return, there may be no world left for him to save.

After the Renegade mission by the crew of the starship Flying Dutchman, the UN Expeditionary Force thought Earth was safe for hundreds of years, at least. After there was trouble on the home front and the president had to authorize a nuclear strike on an American city, UNEF decided they did need the Merry Band of Pirates again. So, the Flying Dutchman is sent out on a simple recon mission. But for the pirates, nothing is ever simple, and their mission will become Armageddon.

I loved the book, I felt the previous book was slowing down with the story a bit. however it comes back with a big, adds some new elements and future that can lead to alot of new things. if you are a fan of the series you will not be disappointed. of course you could pick the story here, as there just enough references to the previous events but you will do yourself a disservice.

no slowing down in the series
Reviewed: 11-09-19
Usually by book 6 things start to slow down in a series, there just isnt much juice left in the grape as the writer squeezes all they can. Well that's not the case in Helldivers 6 the story continues with new threats and issues that pull you deeper into the series. The entire book is good, characters, plot, narration and of course the ending leaves you longing for more... HD7 cant come soon enough
