The Log from the Sea of Cortez is the exciting day-by-day account of Steinbeck's trip to the Gulf of California with biologist Ed Ricketts. Drawn from the longer Sea of Cortez, it is a wonderful combination of science, philosophy, and high-spirited adventure.

some science, but mostly humanism
Reviewed: 01-29-23
I love Steinbeck. he writes with warmth, comedy, and joy about humans. This narrator does an excellent job representing these things and makes for a truly engaging journey even though there are no crazy love affairs or murders or political intrigues... beautiful and simple.

jarring vocals and little story
Reviewed: 01-21-23
the voices were very difficult to bear. I applaud the effort of different characters and I realize that is an art. in this case, between the terrible American accents and the child like voices that are just a bit high, this was a hard one to get through. there also wasn't much plot in the story. it seemed more about throwing English folks in an American setting and using every cliche of the time to squeeze in.

Story
When Bampton’s coroner, Hubert Shillside, does not return from a trip to Oxford, Master Hugh de Singleton is called. Concerned for his old friend, Hugh takes to the road to investigate. Travel is safer than in times hence but, out of sight of prying eyes, it is still unwise to travel alone. Hugh finds a body, stabbed and left to rot, but it is not the body he was expecting to find. Indeed, reports of pillage, attacks, and chaos on the roads out of Oxford suddenly seem rampant. Hugh must ascertain whether the incidents are random, or whether something darker is afoot.

Reviewed: 09-29-22
it's rare to find historical fiction that isn't written to make the heroine more like a modern strong willed woman. this author works hard to show the restraints and classes as well as write an entertaining story. The story, however is secondary to the machinations of the lady Rose, and her companion Daisy as they attempt to investigate.

Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.
