Rapped all the way through

This book is a new and welcome perspective of the dark Lord and chosen one Troup for me. The story taking place from the "villians side" and from a grunt sucked me in right away. With the addition of the author putting in pieces of a growing mystery between the action, I could not stop listening. I will be ready the second book.
Now for the "odd" parts. You will see review complaints that most of the characters in the book have odd nicknames like "Croaker", "Tom Tom", or "Goblin". I think this keeps the wider cast of characters more interesting and informs you about their character. I read the reviews claiming the characters were shallow and it makes me think we listen to two different stories. The characters don't pour out their thoughts and feelings, but there are many hints on what each values and where their limits are.
Overall one of the most refreshing stories I've listened to in a bit.

This is a great book in it's own right, but it is a slow burner. As a YA novel, it goes over a young man's horniness but not to a obnoxious degree. Probably will read the next book.

I enjoyed this guard book. The story of a ragtag team coming together to overcome the improbable is always dear for me. The performance was fantastic from top to bottom. Pacing is solid, never felt that it dragged on a part too long. It takes itself seriously compared to the Caine books. I'd say the tone is closer to Gaunt's Ghosts(I Highly Recommend). Be warned, it doesn't jump straight into the action. So if your attention span is short listen to this at an increased speed. Not much of a spoiler... but Nurgle enjoyers may get something from this work.

If you made it to the 3rd book, I'll assume you could stand Rin as a character, so I'll leave that alone. I didn't know how the series was going to end, but I'm not disappointed. Through the entire book I was trying to calculate how the next chapters would go and be completely wrong. I like it. As a collection, the series had me praying for Rin to pull herself together. For the country to survive the struggle. For the struggle of the shamans and maintaining their sanity. worth the read I'd you mad it this far in the series

This book does not overstay it's welcome, the story does what it needs to in each location and moves on. High action, intrigue, and devious plots. Everything you could want in an inquisition book.
I will mention that I came from this author's series, Gaunt's Ghosts. In both series the author develops main and supporting characters that are hard not to like. It was a pleasant revelation.

The narrator was fantastic, hands down. The plot gripped me. there is sex, so be warned if that's not your thing. it does not overpowered the plot and feels very human. The ending had me clawing for more, but you will see for your self if you make it that far. Well thought out read.

Alex is dead. Dead, and apparently with a one-way ticket to a place that only the worst of the worst go. All for a simple choice he made about a product his company owned. Damned for all time. Luckily for him, he's about to be given a chance. Another choice to make. He can return to the land of the living, though his soul would belong to another. Except the world he's being sent to isn't the same one he came from. It's not even a similar period in time, but from something long past in history. The dark ages.

I listened to many books like this, and I have to say this one impressed me. I saw no jarring plot holes or insane leaps in logic. the narrator has a suitable range of voices and the acting is excellent. This book has a protagonist that thinks, which is a welcomed surprise. Ive hear the comparison to D&D in terms of the lawful evil alignment, it is accurate. But he is not completely heartless and very human. Worth the read.
