An odd audiobook but strangely gripping. Unexpected ending. Worth the listen. Takes a bit of getting used to at the start.

Narrator is good but the story was just good for putting me to sleep. Drones on and on. Plus the very nature of a Holmes story should be labeled A Study in Pedantic.

To survive against this enemy, Captain Tad Thatcher will have to do more than learn how to become an effective commander, or how to wrangle his wayward crew. He will need to reinvent space combat. divide listening time
Reviewed: 04-26-25
I made a cardinal error: I listened to all 6 books over a few days without breaking up the sessions with another book. Definitely should have broken up the sessions. The story is decent, good space battles and main characters. The principal character is a bit sanctimonious but not too badly. There is a lot of verbiage about the battles that tends to be protracted. The narrator is fabulous; does the various voices so well that it is easy to differentiate between the characters.

Story
Well, this year, after the Spring Planting season, I’m really gonna relax and put down roots. It’s the slow life for me. Sure, the talking animals and cultivators coming to live with me are a bit weird, but this year everything is gonna be basically normal. There definitely won’t be any Heavenly Tribulations, ancient formations, or cultivator issues to deal with . . .

Interesting concept
Reviewed: 04-15-25
I mostly enjoyed these 2 books. However, in book 1 there's a need for more of the main character's back story. There's a scant 2-3 sentences about his sudden transition to an entirely new world and culture. How and why did this happen? He seems to have no culture shock and there's no mention of any family or life left behind.
I love the animals and their stories. Very clever (echoes of Animal Farm without the politics).
As with desserts (is it worth the calories), these are worth the investment just to see an interesting concept develop.

Story
Several months after his neighborhood was cloaked in darkness and invaded by the demon-like denizens of a hellish world, life has returned to normal for Miah Gray, a.k.a. Laser Chicken. No longer burdened by PTSD, he is free to enjoy his family and to help pick up the pieces of a pillaged world. At night, he trains with his eight-year-old companion, Bree, a.k.a. Demon Dog, and their neighbors Henry and Sarah, the god-like descendants of Helen of Sparta and the mythological Zeus. All is calm...until new neighbors move in across the street and shatter the peace.

I have listened to several of this author's works, including those of this series. This one has turned me off completely. So much very gratuitous vulgarity, gore, wasted verbiage that didn't advance the story at all. I found myself fast-forwarding entire sections that only described gore, vomit, innards unraveling, disembowelments, etc., none of which helped me understand the story. Frankly, if you took out half the gore and vulgarity, the story would be very enjoyable. I hope others enjoy the story; I did not and consider it a waste.

Story
In Daretana’s greatest mansion, a high imperial officer lies dead—killed, to all appearances, when a tree erupted from his body. Even here at the Empire’s borders, where contagions abound and the blood of the leviathans works strange magical changes, it’s a death both terrifying and impossible. Assigned to investigate is Ana Dolabra, a detective whose reputation for brilliance is matched only by her eccentricities. Rumor has it that she wears a blindfold at all times, and that she can solve impossible cases without even stepping outside the walls of her home.

Story
Twenty-four-year-old Saeris Fane is good at keeping secrets. No one knows about the strange powers she possesses or the fact that she has been picking pockets and stealing from the Undying Queen's reservoirs for as long as she can remember. But a secret is like a knot. Sooner or later, it is bound to come undone. When Saeris comes face-to-face with Death himself, she inadvertently reopens a gateway between realms and is transported to a land of ice and snow. The Fae have always been the stuff of myth, of legend, of nightmares… but it turns out they're real.

not for me
Reviewed: 12-10-24
The story would be fantastic and I would really enjoy it but for the fact that there are so many soft porn scenes and F-bombs. I don't mind cussing and bombs unless they take over the dialogue. The 2 main characters have a lot of sexual tension, which can definitely add to a story. In this case, it at times takes over the story.
I used a credit, so I did return it once I realized the porn verbiage and F's were just getting worse.

I really enjoyed book 1. This one goes heavy into the military action and acronyms to the point I felt I was listening to a bunch of "bro" stuff, but with AIs and aliens. I used a credit so I did finish it but if it'd been a Plus catalog acquisition I would not have completed it.
