About this listen

From the embers of a galaxy in flames, destiny calls upon an unknown guardian.

Captain Axel Finn has spent his life running salvage missions with an alien crew and their war bot. This motley group has found refuge on his ship from their own tumultuous pasts. But little do any of them know, beneath his gentle demeanor, their steadfast captain is far from the peace following, adventure seeking giant of a man they all love. His pacifist ethos meant to safeguard them has edged them to the brink of financial ruin and drawn dangerous enemies.

Forced into a risky salvage operation, the crew uncovers an alien relic not of this galaxy.

Expecting treasure to pay their debts, they instead find an artifact of the Wrath, an extraterrestrial species that once decimated entire worlds. To decipher the true nature of their discovery, Axel seeks Rangnar Soki, a deadly bounty hunter famous for his pursuit of the Stewards—legendary warriors who stood against the Wrath in bygone days. But as the mystery of this artifact deepens, and hunters close in, an old enemy threatens to set the galaxy ablaze.

Axel must choose: accept his legacy and unleash the monster within or watch everything he loves burn.

Gruesome and awesome

Really enjoying this story although there’s a contrast between the maturity of the characters and the intensity of the violence.

We need a hero, or three stomachs, or both

A great story of fallen heroes, troubled past, aliens that look like koalas that are always hungry. Great narratives that worked together bringing the story to life. Can't wait for the next book.

NSS has way of pulling the reader in

I’m enjoying these characters and NSS just pulls you right into their journey. Fantastic science fiction story with action and some funny moments. Narrators both have done great jobs with this series. Eagerly waiting for book 2

One and done...

From the book description you knew where this was going- but they took almost the entire story to get there. It was just tedious and I will not try another as I expect something similar. The plot just dragged on too long, I quit caring about the main character.

a good listen

I enjoyed this book, but it's not NSS's best work, at least as judged by the first book in the series. It's creative, but the story seems to meander too much in the first half or more. It comes together at the end, but right when it's getting good, the book ends. I'm also not crazy about the dual readers. It contributes to a disconnectedness between story lines.

However, I'm now really curious to see where this goes. There is a lot of potential and NSS is among my favorite authors. So, I anticipate that this can only really be judged as a trilogy...
