Story
Alexander Weiss inadvertently insults Athena, goddess of wisdom, and she casts him away on a forgotten isle filled with statues. Being marooned is bad enough, but the fact that the island is also the home of Euryale, elder sister to Medusa, makes the situation a touch worse. The only thing keeping Alex from being petrified is the fact that Euryale has taken a liking to the blundering mortal. For now.

bad writing, worse narration

Awful. Could have been a nice quick nothing to listen to once and immediately forget, but the narrator sounds like she's trying to make all the male characters sound completely brain dead.

Story
For nearly a billion years, every known sentient species in the universe has been the result of genetic and cultural guidance - or "uplifting" - by a previously uplifted patron race. Then humans are discovered. Having already uplifted chimps and dolphins, humanity clearly qualifies as an intelligent species, but did they actually evolve their own intelligence, or did some mysterious patron race begin the process, then suddenly abandon Earth?

"chapters" cut at really weird places

the chapters don't remotely match the book. and some of them actually cut off the narrator mid-sentence. makes it a bit hard to listen to one "chapter" at a time

Story
J.R.R. Tolkien famously described the Second Age of Middle-earth as a ‘dark age, and not very much of its history is (or need be) told’. And for many years readers would need to be content with the tantalizing glimpses of it found within the pages of The Lord of the Rings and its appendices, including the forging of the Rings of Power, the building of the Barad-dûr and the rise of Sauron.

Unpleasant to listen to
Reviewed: 10-20-23
This just doesn't work as an audiobook.
Every "chapter" starts with the real world historical information about the story that the chapter is named for, read by a narrator with a... suboptimal voice. It then switches, quite jarringly, to a better narrator reading relevant story bits.
probably interesting to someone if a more scholarly bent, but downright bad for someone looking for the stories it contains.

not a bad story. But, if you removed all of the time that the protagonist spends whining about not being a wizard, it'd be about half as long.

because about 1/3 of it is genuinely good, 1/3 is garbage that contradicts stuff in the other 2/3rds, and the remainder is..."okay"
And some of the voice acting is absolutely appalling. Highly recommend getting the print version, there's a couple of stories where the actor did such a bad/obnoxious voice that they're impossible to enjoy.

People start dropping dead around Charlie, giant ravens perch on his building, and it seems that everywhere he goes, a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Strange names start appearing on his nightstand notepad, and before he knows it, those people end up dead, too. Yup, it seems that Charlie Asher has been recruited for a new job, an unpleasant but utterly necessary one: Death.

My only criticisms would be the rather uncreative names of the fantasy animals, and, every once in a while, the pronunciation of the narrator is slightly off. Very small gripes for such a good story.
