Stories are amazing-the narrator needs to learn how to pronounce certain words

It’s a shame the narrator didn’t take time to ask or research on how to pronounce certain words. Several times in each story he took liberties; stressing the wrong syllable, pronouncing a CH incorrectly etc. etc. For me, it detracted from the stories. He has a good voice but I had to stop several times to figure out what he meant and that defeats the purpose of an audible book. Shame

THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Call me eccentric, but I believe a narrator for Audible, should be acquainted with the proper pronunciation of the English language…
This man needs a Refresher Course .

Great stories, shamelessly read

The reader constantly mispronounced the words written by such great authors of the 1800’s. This, along with such a dry performance, explains why this is a free book on audible. Painful to listen to, but I did get used to it, somehow. ‘A’ for effort, Anthony Maher!

This book is ok.

Chapter's are too close together, not enough time between them. Narrator has a few voice.. I know this is time consuming, but if he messed up, he would go back and restart. Unfortunately, the editors didn't take out the extra incorrect bits. Book does have some great stories in it though.

The Lovecraft stories are bad

50 short stories for $0.66? I had to give it a try, and overall I'm glad I did, but this is NOT a great collection. There are a ton of stories by H.P. Lovecraft, all kinda cruddy and boring. The narraror isn't awful, but he mispronounces way too many words, many of which are commonplace. Some of the better stories, by Edgar Allan Poe, Sabine Baring-Gould and Thomas Hardy help to raise the average a bit and redeem the audiobook as a whole. I wish I could program the audible app to skip certain chapters (i.e. the Lovecraft stories and a couple of other stinkers), and the listen would be a lot more worthwhile. Another rather annoying feature of this second volume is that it duplicates stories from volume one (same exact recordings!), only a couple out of 50, but it is sloppy that the publishers would permit such a thing.

Better Than Volume I

This was better than the 1st collection. I did not heared as many stories full of racial slurs in this 2nd Volume as I did in the 1st Volume.

Do NOT buy this if you are expecting MODERN horror

This is not a collection of modern horror stories, as some buyers are expecting (understandable considering the lurid picture the publishers chose for the cover, bordering on false advertising!). These are old classics, written more than a hundred years ago, and are for fans who like the language, pacing, and subtle, atmospheric chills found in these stories---as I do. And at this price (less than 70 cents for over 28 hours of audio), it is a must have for my collection. As in all anthologies, there will be some stories you skip over. There is also a volume 1 in this series, also at an unbelievable price. (There are some problems with the pauses in this audio. Is a pause a cue to tell you that a new story is beginning or is it just a pause in the story you are reading? At other times, there will be no pause between stories. This can be confusing. For the price, I can live with this.) The narration is more than adequate for this bargain selection.

Hard to listen to

I tried to listen for over an hour. The narrator is so monotone that I had to stop for fear of falling asleep.
