About this listen

If life had gone as she planned, Lexie Green would have been teaching English at a prestigious university, not persuading spoiled, rich women to buy overpriced clothes they didn't need and often looked ridiculous wearing. Can you say electric yellow see-through skirts and torn jeans with unfinished hems?

Still, although this isn't the life Lexie would have chosen, all is going well. At least until Lexie is fired and her deranged ex-boyfriend tries to kidnap her.

Deciding that it's better to accept a mysterious inheritance from a great aunt she's never heard of rather than end up kept in a cage as her ex's pet poodle, Lexie packs up and heads to Kansas. So, what if she has to go by a new name and live in a town that she can't find on a map?

Unfortunately, once she arrives in her new hometown, everyone there seems just a tad off-kilter, and Lexie's cousin insists that the citizens are magical.

Even though Lexie doesn't believe the nonsense about her being the Ravenscraft Shield, she does believe her father was murdered - a father she never knew existed, and she investigates his death.

Too bad whoever killed her father now wants Lexie dead as well.

Charming Story

The story was interesting, not usually reading magic type books with charms, etc. The narration was absolutely fabulous. I loved listening to her voice. Very well read!

Not my favorite

Main character was irratating, or the maybe it was the narrator. She seemed an air head. Too much clothing detail.

Reads like fan fiction

It's not fan fiction, but it sure seems like it. The narrator complains about her weight and other people reacting to it at least once every half hour. She even mentioned she's only a size 14, so I get the idea that the author has issues.
The shallow, vapid narrator talks about fashion and reality tv entirely too often and has to choose between two gorgeous men. It's a self-insert fan fiction... without the fan fiction part.
That said, it was entertaining enough to fonish, but I did groan in exasperation a lot. If I wasn't covered in gunk from painting the bathroom, I probably would have turned it off and picked something else.

Great start to a new series

Denise Swanson and Tiffany Morgan team up to bring a storyline together that is different from all others I’ve read/listened to in the paranormal/mystery genre. The characters and storyline were well-developed. I highly recommend this to fans of the paranormal/mystery genre.

A great read

This book is easy to keep up with even though there are a lot of characters. The mystery is not a cliff hanger but very interesting. Loved the ending which indicates there is another book.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get worse…

I usually like Denise Swanson’s books but this is a disappointment. I was hoping that if I gave it a chance, I would get attached to the characters and be able to move past their superficial triteness. However, not only does that continue, the story gets more and more inane. Case in point - a random ex-boyfriend who, out of nowhere, attempts to stab the main character, then randomly comes back to life throughout the story, eventually becoming a zombie. The bones of a good story might be here (…maybe…) but logical progress and character development are missing (both important considerations when you’re asking someone to suspend reality in a supernatural story.)
