About this listen

Dr. Rosalind Werner is at the forefront of a groundbreaking new water technology - if only she can get support for her work. Nicholas, Commissioner of Water for New York, is skeptical - and surprised by his reaction to Rosalind. While they fight against their own attraction, they stand on opposite sides of a battle that will impact thousands of lives.

As a biochemist in early 1900s New York, Doctor Rosalind Werner has dedicated her life to the crusade against waterborne diseases. She is at the forefront of a groundbreaking technology that will change the way water is delivered to every household in the city - but only if she can get people to believe in her work.

Newly appointed Commissioner of Water for New York, Nicholas Drake, is highly skeptical of Rosalind and her team's techniques. When a brewing court case throws him into direct confrontation with her, he is surprised by his reaction to the lovely scientist. While Rosalind and Nick wage a private war against their own attraction, they stand firmly on opposite sides of a battle that will impact far more than just their own lives.

As the controversy grows more public and inflammatory and Rosalind becomes the target of an unknown enemy, the odds stacked against these two rivals swiftly grow more insurmountable with every passing day.

What drew me to EC’s books was her fine plots, overlaid with romance that was sweet but didn’t overwhelm the story w endless gushing about the beauty of the man or woman yada yada- but also and most importantly the humour and wit in her story and conversations. This book provided the earlier qualities for most part although the storyline wasn’t really fascinating at first- but she sadly struck out on my favourite part- the wit and humour that made me laugh..... I hope her next book in this series is full of that again!

Missing the wit I’ve come to expect

I really enjoyed the historical setting and characters in this story, I only want wish the heroin would have fully admitted her fault and apologized for her specific failure. That is how we are able to mend, forgive, and improve. Other than that, it is a lovely story.

Fascinating story with good narration and interesting characters, Particularly liked the swings of good and bad events and the one evil character.

I’m listening to all of Elizabeth’s books from first publication. They’re all good. They might be getting even better as I go. My only suggestion in this epilogue is to give it a little more passion. Give it a brash, roguish Nicholas ending. ;) Not a sweet, prim, proper ending like Rosaline. ☺️

Great book

Rosalind is a real pioneer. I admire how she has a job and passion that is not normally associated with women, but have noticed this theme in many of Camden's books. She is willing to put what she knows to good use, no matter what.
Nicholas is not too happy to have to work with Rosalind, but soon finds himself listening to what she has to say even if he is still a bit weary of her techniques.
I really liked seeing their relationship grow and how they learned that even if they did not always agree, that listening to one another did have merit.

Loved it

This is the literary equivalent of trying to calculate when two trains are going to hit each other. She sets up the conflict and it's not the easy answer you want it to be but in the end it is so satisfying.

delightful suspense

A Daring Ventur I consider to be the perfect book! Many times the women characters have intelligence but are written to possess no ability to make decisions or think for themselves ! This indecisiveness goes on and on in most books to the point of distraction to the reader, The women in This book were shown to be forthright and steadfast and this gives the purpose of the story credence ,and pleasure when reading it . Rachel Botchans narration is always spot on ,as she effortlessly brings each character to life.

I was a little thrown by the heavy Boston accent put on Nick’s Manhattan character.

Why a Boston accent for Nick?
