Publisher's summary

It's summertime in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and Bertie James' college class is having their 40th-anniversary reunion. The opening-night reception is held at the Lighthouse Library, and Lucy and her colleagues have assembled an exhibit of library artifacts showing how libraries have changed over the years. After the reception, some of the women take a walk down the boardwalk to the pier, using flashlights to illuminate the dark path, but what's scarier than the dark is finding the former director of the Lighthouse Library floating lifeless in the water.

Helena Sanchez, the former director, wasn't much loved and spent the party being rude to almost everyone there. As a result, Lucy finds herself in deep water as she rocks the boat, questioning several suspects. But she'll have to batten down the hatches and fast before she's left high and dry...and right in the killer's crosshairs.

Really Enjoying this series

I'm really enjoying this series. Love the characters, although I would probably be much ruder to Louise Jane. Charles the cat is great. Overall a great light easy listen.

LOVED THIS BOOK

THIS SERIES IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES, AND THIS LATEST ADVENTURE DID NOT DISAPPOINT. AS WITH ALL EXCELLENT READS, THIS ONE FULFILLED, MAYBE EVEN EXCEEDED, MY EXPECTATIONS AND LEFT ME YEARNING FOR WHAT IS NEXT. THE NEXT BOOK CANNOT COME QUICKLY ENOUGH.

Another enjoyable story

I read the first six books in this series and enjoyed this story as much as all the others. It is entertaining and fun, and it is refreshing to have a "G-rated" series to enjoy. The reader was enthusiastic and all the characters had distinct, clear voices that brought them to life. Since I had read the other books, the accents were not what I was expecting. Most of them were fine, but I cringed when Connor talked. His voice sounds like a much older man from the deep south. I was able to get past that and to enjoy the book. Louise Jane's voice made me smile and that's probably what I'll hear in my head when I read the next book. :-)

I love the Lighthouse Mysteries

as usual this was a delightful read. Of course the fact she is a librarian doesn't hurt since I am a retired librarian. If you enjoyed Nancy Drew as a kid, you will love this series for adults. It contains a little romance, friendship, humor and a good mystery. what more could you want?

Pretty Good

A Death Long Overdue is ok. Louise Jane is annoying as usual. The pace was a bit slow in this book and I skipped ahead to get to the end.

Unsatisfying ending

SPOILER AHEAD: This is the third or fourth book that I've read in this series. I was enjoying it just as much as the others until the ending, which was very unsatisfying. It felt like the author got bored and used a deus ex machina to solve it, I think part of the issue is that, in this book, ghosts only exist in Louise Jane's head and she is depicted as a bit of a crackpot. At least in the others, spirits showed up several times, even though Lucy keeps insisting they are not real. It's fun enough to have Louise Jane being a surprisingly effective ghost storyteller. And I enjoyed Tina playing a ghost to get the murderer to confess, though I felt badly about how blasé Lucy was about Tina getting assaulted for her trouble. But then the entire mystery comes down to Lucy having a dream that tells her how to solve the case? And Charles is supernaturally guided to the necklace? It felt like a complete cop out by the author. I could make an excuse that Lucy's unconscious knew the answer so she saw it in a dream, though the author should have worked that into the explanation. But I draw the line at a cat going directly a large bag containing heavy jewels and giving it to Lucy. Either these books need to go all in that ghosts are real or leave them out. I'm also still not a fan of the narrator who talks like a Disney theme park actor talking to an audience of young kids. And I hate the terrible accent and voice she gives Connor. I've gotten these books despite the narrator's performance because I liked the overall story. But this ending was a complete dud.
