About this listen
When a band of runaway slaves brings Union-loyal Beth Bumgartner a wounded Confederate soldier named Joe, it is the catalyst that pushes her to defy her pacifist parents and become a nurse during the Battle of Antietam. Her mother's mysterious goodbye gift is filled with quilt blocks that bring comfort to Beth during the hard days and lonely nights, but as she sews each block, she realizes there is a hidden message of faith within the pattern that encourages and sustains her. Reunited with Joe, Beth learns his secret and puts the quilt's message to its greatest test - but can betrayal be forgiven?

Story
After a tornado rips through her town, store owner Abigail comes across a piece of fabric from a wedding dress among the devastation. Abigail is moved to start collecting other swatches of fabric she finds - her neighbor’s kitchen curtains, a man’s necktie, a dog’s bed - which she stashes in shopping bags. As she pursues her seemingly absurd quest, horrible realities spark the question, “What kind of a God would allow such tragedy?”

Story
Buried, by my family's fame. Dying to escape the limelight, and finally, I do. Being raised as a Jayne, I'm under constant scrutiny. The rock band my brothers formed makes it impossible to stay under the radar. Paparazzi, tabloids, rabid fans - you name it and I've got it. It all makes me sick. But getting shipped off to crazy Aunt Betty's house in my senior year of high school isn't any better. After all, there isn't a stray kid or pet in the world that my aunt wouldn't take in. Then I meet her. She's cautious, suspicious, and not interested in me at all. But that's fine by me.

She's eager to leave America - and the painful memories it holds for her - far behind...and then she meets Elijah.

Story
Struggling alone on the family farm, Abigail Tidwell knows exactly who to blame for her hardships: the Americans. If it weren't for their part in the war, her father and brothers would be home rather than fighting abroad. But no amount of antipathy could have prepared her for the shocking sight of a wounded American soldier on her property, a man in dire need of her help. Grudgingly, Abigail tends to the soldier's injuries and anticipates the satisfaction of turning him over to the authorities once he is healed. But fate has other plans.

Story
A hand-picked cadre of warriors, they had the fierce courage of their Scots forefathers, combined with the stealth and cunning of the Indians who lived beside them in the wilderness. Battling the French in a no-holds-barred combat, they forged a new brand of honor, became a new breed of men - MacKinnon's Rangers. Iain MacKinnon had been forced to serve the British crown, but compassion urged him to save the lovely lass facing certain death at the hands of the Abenaki. He'd defied his orders, endangered his brothers, his men and his mission, all for a woman. But when he held Annie's sweet body in his arms, he could feel no regret.

A Heartbeat Away
The story was good, but it was hard to tell who was saying what several times. I would have to rerun it many times trying to figure it out. The author wouldn’t let us know who was speaking or when another character would add to the conversation. The narrator used the same reading voice for the different characters, so it made it hard to follow at times. I did enjoy it, though. This is just constructive information.

Great story
I think the book was very well done, but the narrator needed to pause when there were changes in scene, so that the reader could identify that there was a shift in the storyline. The lack of such a pause to indicate that shift made the story momentarily confusing each time there was a shift in scene.

Can be graphic at times
Story can be a bit difficult to follow at times as you don’t know who is talking at times. This is written during the heart of the civil war, about a woman and family desiring to help others. All of this is wonderful, but it may be very difficult for some to listen to the process of amputation and the horrific cries of pain discussed. If you are a member of armed service, or love someone in the military, or law enforcement and first responder, this book may be a bit triggering.

A Hard story
I couldn't finish this book. I felt like it was repeating the story over and over and never moved on. The narrator had no inflection in her voice and was very monotone.

Disappointed,!
Disappointed that Joe didn't find out more about his brother! What happened when Joe made it home? I felt the story had potential to fill in the blanks!

Took me a bit
This story took me a bit to dial in on the style and what was happening. But, once I understood the characters, plot, and setting, I did a little better.

Love’s Power
A wonderfully written story about the power of love and faith. We know not the direction our lives are taking but trust the one who is leading. A great lesson in forgiveness for not only others but for ourselves.
