About this listen

From London to Corsica to Paris — as a young woman pursues the truth about her late mother, two captivating love stories unfurl in this captivating novel from the author of the New York Times bestsellers The Paris Apartment and The Guest List.

Kate Darling's enigmatic mother — a once-famous ballerina — has passed away, leaving Kate bereft. When her grandmother falls ill and bequeaths to Kate a small portrait of a woman who bears a striking resemblance to Kate's mother, Kate uncovers a mystery that may upend everything she thought she knew.

Kate's journey to find the true identity of the woman in the portrait takes her to some of the world's most iconic and indulgent locales, revealing a love story that began in the wild 1920s and was disrupted by war and could now spark new love for Kate. Alternating between Kate's present-day hunt and voices from the past, The Book of Lost and Found casts light on family secrets and love — both lost and found.

Critic reviews

"Lucy Foley masterfully evokes period and setting in The Book of Lost and Found. Readers may count on losing hours of sleep to remain immersed in lush Corsica, luminous Paris, and lively New York, with an unforgettable group of characters, and a mystery that spans decades. Sublime!" (Erika Robuck, best-selling author of Hemingway's Girl and Call Me Zelda)
" The Book of Lost and Found is an irresistibly entertaining and evocative novel, a tender, heartwrenching tale of love lost and found immersed in a suspenseful historical mystery. Lucy Foley's impressive debut thoroughly satisfies, and I can't wait to read whatever she writes next." (Jennifer Chiaverini, author of Mrs. Grant and Madame Jule and Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker)
" The Book of Lost and Found is a sheer joy to read. Everything I love is in there - romance, the linking of past and present, travel to wonderful (and wonderfully described) destinations, characters I wish I could meet, and an evocative mystery - all spun together with Foley's engaging and elegant prose." (Mary Simses, author of The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop and Café)

The first few chapters were a little difficult to follow but loved this overall. Not as suspenseful as some of her other books, but a good story nonetheless

Different but great

I thought it would be another Agatha Christie style but it turned to be a drama set against Second World War

Interesting and will get you hooked with enough surprises and twists

Not a Thriller but still interesting

Beautiful

Beautifully written and told, many tears! Not a traditional “happy ending” but there’s something more real about that…

Heart wrenching and beautiful

The intertwining of the lives of our hero and 2 heroines (from different generations) makes a good story while also encompassing history. If you enjoy observing how fate’s twists and turns change lives both for the good and the not so good, this is an entertaining listen. My only bugaboo with the narration was the voice used for the males. It was so grating that it was hard to picture them as described, which was manly and handsome.

Nice alternation between the 1920’s - 40’s and the mid 1980’s

The book was beautiful. The characters were well developed, the story was interesting, the scenes were lovely, and the writing was beautiful. Very good read.

Beautiful

The narrator did a good job of giving voice to three generations of women, throughout their lifes. It was sometimes hard to keep timelines straight as the story jumped between the present and two previous generations. the whole story had great range of joy and sorrow.

I loved the story and would recommend it! I had read the negative reviews so didn't know what to expect. I guess we are all looking for different things in a novel, but I enjoyed the story and had no issues with the way it unfolded.
