Publisher's summary

The last thing Emerson Rose expects is to fall for his best friend, Rhys, especially since he’s never been attracted to a man before. Everything in his life is already complicated enough. He’s put his own future on hold to raise his two younger siblings, and confusing feelings for the guy who always has his back muddy the waters even more. But then something astonishing happens. For one perfect moment, he thinks Rhys might feel the same - only to have his world come crashing down around him a second time.

Rhys Lancaster has always known he’s gay and that Emerson isn’t. Best friends since childhood, their easy companionship has usually been enough. Between his job, his adrenaline-filled adventures, and hanging out with Emerson and his siblings, he has it good...until he wakes up in the hospital with no memories of the last year of his life.

Like they normally do when things go horribly wrong, Rhys and Emerson support each other. Frustrated by all he’s lost, Rhys stays with Emerson during his recovery, and Emerson helps Rhys through the fog, while pushing those other feelings aside. To make matters worse, Rhys knows Emerson’s keeping something from him. Everything feels different now when he looks at Emerson, and as they fall into a comfortable routine, that aching desire doesn’t stay buried for long.

But Emerson has a family to raise, and Rhys is struggling to figure out what’s going on inside his head. Unless they can push past the doubts and fears to seal that connection between them again, this tragedy might become the one each has to weather alone.

Beautifully Written and Narrated!

My expectations were high and I couldn’t have been satisfied! The narrator was spot on, with each character, and the storyline was angst and love! Such a fantastic duo!

Highly recommended.

An Emotional Super Slow-Burn Love Between Friends

First and foremost, I must gush about narrator Kale Williams's terrific performance. His smooth delivery, varied character voices, and the emotion he brings to every performance - this audio book being no exception - is why he's become one of my favorite narrators.

And there is a ton of emotion packed into this heartfelt love story. It's bit of a roller coaster as lifelong friends Emerson and Rhys grapple with life struggles, and the subject matter is quite heavy (off-page death of parents, raising young siblings, accident recovery and memory loss). Through it all, they are a supportive constant in each other's intertwined lives, and family plays a central role as well.

The winding road progression of their relationship from friends to lovers is a tentative super slow-burn that includes a gradual sexual awakening for Emerson (demi). The story is especially heart-wrenching at the start, and it did seem to drag a bit at times, but the HEA payoff was satisfying. I received this free review copy audio book by request and have left this honest review voluntarily. [Story: 3.5 Stars]

Slow Burn

At times it was a little to slow for my taste, but it was still a beautiful story. Its emotional with light drama. I don’t read/listen to a lot of stories with characters who identify as demi, but I really liked this one and though it was done well.

Kale Williams did a great job. I could feel the longing and love from these characters. Each person was easy to identify.

Fabulous Story & Narration🎧 Sweet & Heartwarming!

This is a fabulously sweet friends to lovers romance novel, it is a beautifully written story that grabbed both my attention and my heart, captivating both the entire book. I adored the two lead characters, Emerson Rose and Rhys Lancaster, best friends since childhood. Emerson accepted Rhys when he said he was gay, and Rhys loved him for that. The two shared a bond like no other, Rhys was there for Emerson when he needed him most, after the death of his parents, and he stepped in as the guardian for his younger brother and sister. When Emerson questioned his own sexuality, Rhys was the one he turned to, and it was then they both realized that the feelings they harbored for each may have morphed beyond friendship. But before they can come to grips with those feelings, life throws them a curveball. After a serious injury, Rhys wakes up, not remembering the past year. Emerson helps him recover but does not tell him what happened between them or what Emerson discovered about himself, that he is demi. I loved how everything played out in this wonderfully plotted story, there is plenty of drama, heartfelt and heartwarming moments and emotional ones too. It is a slow burn romance, but the payout is so worth it. I also adored Emerson’s two siblings, his geeky little brother, Sam, and his wise beyond her years sister, Audrey. Christina Lee, thank you for this wonderful story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the fabulous narration, Christina Lee cast the perfect narrator to bring her story and characters to life. Kale Williams is a talented narrator and a versatile voice artist. He had a complete understanding of the characters he portrayed, giving each a voice that fit that character’s persona to a tee, sounding believable in every role he played and just as I pictured the characters to sound. He set the perfect tone for the story, captured his characters’ every emotion and had you feeling every single one. Kale Williams is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another fantastic listen.

A long road to a solid relationship.

I struggle with books that take a large chunk of the story for the characters to get together. I am not looking for insta-love but in this case the characters being best friends for so long negates the possibility of that.

It is easy to see why Emerson thinks he needs to protect Rhys because Emerson has spent most of his life as the role of protector.

Rhys has always been such an integral part of Emerson’s life it seems like it would be too good to be true to hope for more.

Although I would have preferred Emerson be honest with Rhys earlier the fact that they have such a strong bond makes up for the delayed gratification.

Kale Williams is perfect narrator for this book and really brings to life.

I Liked It

I liked the story, sweet and steady, it was a nice change from angsty and thrilling books I usually listen to. I enjoyed following Rhys and Emerson's relationship development, they were so very good together. Narrator did a great job with voices and storytelling and made this a good listening experience.
