A Bastion Club novel, and all of them are good and each is different.
Another romance novel, one where a misunderstanding years ago left each of them mistrusting the other (separated for many years until after Waterloo), but this one does have a real plot to keep you interested long after the gratuitous erotica has you yawning.
Aside from the romance aspect, there are murders, traitorous activites found out, help from fellow ex spies, and a lot of speculation and action throughout. No spoilers. Just enjoy it.
Jill Tanner does a pretty good job with this one.

Lovers and murder and diplomats, oh my

Great story, loved every bit of it. The sex scenes could have been less especially after their first reunion encounter. But otherwise it was very well written . Didn’t like the male voices but that’s difficult with just a female narrator. Thank you for the great entertainment!

Better than Excellent!

I love Stephanie Laurens and her Bastion Club novels but this one just dragged on i thought. did not hold my interest at times i just turned it off and came back to it later. no real "romance" and to me the plot was so-so. just not my cup of tea on this one

It was alright

It could’ve been cut in half and I would possibly have found it enjoyable. So drawn out, especially the sex scenes. So much repetition. Some female narrators who attempt to perform in a “male” voice sound very irritating. But this narrator uses the same voice throughout, So Charles would be talking, but it was the same voice used for Penny so it was confusing.

Prepare to grim-ace to the end

I like Stephanie Laurens but I found even the sex scenes too drawn out in this book. And that narrator is truly wretched. It might have been her fault this was so bad.

Really slow with TERRIBLE narration

loved another of the Club's mystery adventure. Stephanie can take you away. I have a great drive to and from work listening to the story being acted out.

another great mystery adventure.

Grimaced. Say that to yourself. Then turn the 'a' into a hard a. ugh. With all the grim'a'cing in the story, it interrupts the flow and becomes increasingly disturbing. Not enough to lower my estimation of the story, but enough to have me writing this review.

Is that how the British pronounce the word? ugh

all good, except the pronunciation of...

I read the paperback version of this years ago....really enjoyed the book. S Laurens is an excellent writer and developer of characters. The narrator did not do justice to either the story or the characters. Could not even finish the book Glad I didn't have to pay for it.

Typical Laurens story

The plot was an interesting blending of generational action and consequences falling on future generations. Ambiguous actions, in this story treason or no treason, committed by family members wreaks havoc, including murder, on the current generation resolved to solving the murders. The storyline included a standard romance influenced by past encounters. Both of the storylines, mystery and romance, were diluted by the length of the book. 17+ hours of narrative should have provided more action, (other than repetitive sex), complex plot lines, in depth conflicts between characters, and a thorough development of all characters. The book would have benefited from tightened storylines and being reduced to 6 hours, give or take. The problem with 17+ hours of narrative with nothing happening to drive the story for long periods of time results in reader or listener losing interest and becoming frustrated. I felt like the author, that I typically enjoy, lost focus and didn’t show up for 2/3s of the book. I am ambivalent about recommending the book. Obviously, from the rating and reviews the majority of reviewers liked it giving it high marks and praise, so maybe it was just me and I was disappointed because I expected something complex and this storyline wasn’t. The narrator was competent and very enjoyable to listen to, even for 17 hours!
