About this listen

The classic story of Abbie and Will Deal—pioneers who left everything behind for a new life on America’s frontier.

Abbie Mackenzie dreamed of becoming a fine lady like her aristocratic grandmother, devoting herself to music and art. But at eighteen Abbie found a different dream, turning away from the promise of a comfortable life as a doctor’s wife to marry handsome, quiet Will Deal. Together, they eagerly accepted the challenge of homesteading in Nebraska territory, where the prairies stretched as far as the eye could see, and only the strongest survived for long.

For over 90 years, people have cherished Abbie’s story—an inspiring story of struggle against unexpected perils, of love, of the land she helped nurture, and the family she raised.

As a Nebraskan, I’m proud of this historical fiction. It captures the essence of the pioneer spirit along with great sacrificial love of living and applying the talents to help others.

Very historic and accurate pioneer homesteading tale as the author lived in Elmwood (Cedar City) and based the main character on her mother. Anyone that enjoys tales of rural life will enjoy this. I liked the way the story followed her from a teenager through all of the changes of her life.

Classic pioneer tale well read

This audiobook is beautifully narrated. An excellent story that almost feels like autobiographical in nature (it isn’t) in the detail with which it is told.

Wonderful Story

This story is very special to me. I am so happy that it has finally been recorded. My mother read it to me growing up and I have read it several times since. A story about life, the strength of women, and the value of community. A beautiful description of settling the Nebraska territory. Stories that anyone who's ever had to move somewhere new and how they dealt with it. I hope all the other titles by Bess Streeter Aldrich will be recorded for Audible.
