About this listen

Six days into a global pandemic, the plan is simple: Stay alive. With their close friend, Dan, and limited amounts of ammunition, Paul Hessler and his wife, Sophia, quickly find themselves on their own in the snowy Midwest. The police and military have already lost the battle, and in a world where chaos rules the streets, what chance does the everyday man have against the undead nipping at their heels? Armed with only shotguns and handguns, this untrained trio is about to find out what it takes to survive the apocalypse. The only question is...will they want to?

Interesting story but less than average narration

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Overall the story is interesting, but I am not a big fan of the narrator. He makes a great effort but is rather mono tone. I did like the occasional sound effect that was thrown in as it made for something different.

How could the performance have been better?

I think with a different narrator the overall could have been a solid 4 star book.

Any additional comments?

******SPOILERS FOLLOW************

First let me say that I have read a lot of books in this genre and a lot of people in these books are HOOAH kill them all Army/Marine infantry type heros who ALWAYS seem to make the right decision so it makes this book hard to listen to because they keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again. I would like to believe that the average man/woman would learn from blunders that get others killed. Paul is looked to as the "leader" of the group and accepts the responsibility for the deaths of those around him but doesn't seem to learn lessons and apply them to his current situation. When his wife is killed his inability to function is completely understandable and his downward spiral is hard to watch. All that being said that is what I like about the book because it is very different from most other books of this type. If you are looking for a good book I would recommend you buy this in print and read it instead of getting the audio book, but I would say that if you can get past the narration it is a good story and I will be getting the next book in this series just because I want to know what happens next.

Consider a different narrator.

Narrators volume wasn't consistent in the story and his emphasis wasn't always appropriate for the situation.

Good Zombie story.

No ending just drops off. That's a good sales pitch for the next book I guess. lol. Not bad overall. I've read better and much much worse. Take a chance you might like it.

Can't bear the whining reader

Would you try another book from Sean Thomas Fisher and/or Mark Westfield?

I wanted to listen to this book but after 15 minutes of grinding agony I had to turn it off. I don't know if the reader is trying to sound sexy or spooky but it is horrible!

Would you be willing to try another one of Mark Westfield’s performances?

NO!

Don't waste your time.

Most Apocalyptic books have inconsistencies in them especially where firearms are concerned. This book is no exception. Almost all of them are due to lack of knowledge/experience. I know of few handguns that fire a 3 round burst and none of them are civilian legal. Firing 3 rounds in rapid succession from a handgun is not only a waste of ammo but isn't going to improve the chance of scoring a hit.
Anybody who makes it past the first couple of days will know or have learned the most basic lesson of survival. Noise attracts attention and attention is often fatal. These people seem to be unable/unwilling to grasp this concept.
All of the above earns it a 3 star rating. The last half of the book is what earns it the 2 star. It is dedicated to one of the characters as they wallow in, and plumb the depths of, self pity and recrimination. Yes I understand a tragic loss can cause this reaction and often does. What I don't understand is the authors desire to drag us through it for hours. I listen to books to improve my day not ruin it. By the time I was near the end of this book I couldn't decide if I wanted to track down the author and beat him senseless, or put a razor to my wrists and take a hot bath. Unless you feel you have sins/crimes you need to be tormented for don't bother with this book.

Not at the top of its class

All the things that plague this genre are part of this book. Poor writing skill, poor story line, lots of gratuitous explicit sex, comic book style dialog.
Do not waste your time.
