About this listen

Over a stellar career, Roger Martin has advised the CEOs of some of the world's most successful companies. From the beginning, he noted that almost every executive he talked to had a "model"—a framework or way of thinking that guided their strategy and activities. But these models tended to become automatic, so much so that when one didn't work, the typical response was just to apply it again—with greater enthusiasm.

Martin took a fresh, critical approach to helping. When company leaders came to him with fundamental questions—How do you decide where to play and how to win? What is the key to shaping and changing corporate culture? How can you design a successful, sustainable innovation process?—his first response was to break the spell of the current model with a memo articulating a new way to think about the problem at hand and a more powerful and effective way to overcome it.

Over time, these ideas worked their way into Martin's many Harvard Business Review articles. Now, for the first time, they appear together in A New Way to Think. With his trademark incisive intellect and clarity, Martin covers the entire breadth of the management landscape—illuminating the true nature of competition, explaining how company success revolves around customers, revealing how strategy and execution are really the same thing, and much more.

Excellent

I think this is a very good book. I found it a bit of a slog at times which is why I didn’t give it full marks. However it does a great job of pushing back against many of the key business models and providing a fresh way to look at them. Very valuable.

Great book

The reader did great justice to a wonderfully crafted treatise. The arguments about models complement what I learnt from my MBA.

Challenging and Thought Provoking

Martin hit the nail on the head with this book.

The manner in which this author and thinker can drill down into to nub of the key issues is just mind altering.

Definitely worth a read.

Truly A New Way to Think

This book confirms how thinking differently shapes a new reality. Strategy is the core lesson of this book and Martin defines it differently from the traditional definition. I was disappointed that I finished the book. Definitely listening to this again. Excellent book to gain knowledge and insight from.

Okay… a lot of people culture from the early 2010’s

It is an exciting book as it wraps up many people as a strategic asset that has evolved over the years. Beyond that, it’s always good to see Mr Martin applying his framework, but I think it lacks a bit of novelty and maybe a framework designed for the topic, not just new lenses on the old one.

Slow and boring

I just couldn’t get through it. I was excited about the concept but couldn’t get into it.
