Story
Zanders: Chicago hockey isn't complete without me—everyone's favorite player to hate. I know my role, and I play it well. In fact, I thoroughly enjoy spending the majority of my game time in the penalty box before leaving the arena with a new girl on my arm each night. What I don't like is the new flight attendant on our team's private plane. She works for me, not the other way around. But I'll be sure to remind her of that, and I can guarantee, by the end of the season, she'll be begging to quit her job.

I’m the first one to tell you I have issues. Trust issues. Family issues. Probably a few others I haven’t discovered yet. Which is why I prefer to keep my life as simple and uncomplicated as possible. Until him. Blake McAdams barrels into my life and refuses to leave. He’s relentlessly optimistic, sexy as hell, annoyingly persistent, and…wants to be friends? Because…he thinks I’m interesting? Yeah, I’ll pass. Thanks. Only, somehow, we end up doing just that.

Publisher's summary
NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A passionate and powerful romance featuring a transgender man and an ex-Orthodox woman who find each other through their devotion to art, and fall in love despite all odds, from bestselling author Victoria Lee
“A sensual love story about art and passion . . . emotional and heart-aching.”—Ashley Poston, New York Times bestselling author of The Dead Romantics
A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: PopSugar, She Reads, Publishers Weekly
Elisheva Cohen has just returned to New York after almost a decade away. The wounds of her past haven’t fully healed, but four years of sobriety and a scholarship to study photography with art legend Wyatt Cole are signs of good things to come, right? They could be, as long as Ely resists self-sabotage. She’s lucky enough to hit it off with a handsome himbo her first night out in the city. But the morning after their mind-blowing hookup, reality comes knocking. When Wyatt Cole walks into the classroom, Ely realizes the man she just spent the night with, the man whose name she couldn’t hear over the loud club music, is her teacher.
Everyone in the art world is obsessed with Wyatt Cole. He’s immensely talented and his notoriously reclusive personal life makes him even more compelling. But behind closed doors, Wyatt’s past is a painful memory. After coming out as transgender, Wyatt was dishonorably discharged from the military and disowned by his family. Since these traumatic experiences, Wyatt has worked hard for his sobriety and his flourishing art career. He can’t risk it all for Ely, no matter how attracted to her he is or how bad he feels about insisting she drop his class in exchange for a strictly professional mentorship. Wyatt can help with her capstone photography project, but he cannot, under any circumstances, fall in love with her in the process.
Through the lens of her camera, Ely must confront the reason she left New York in the first place: the Orthodox community that raised her, then shunned her because of her substance abuse. Along the way, Wyatt’s walls begin to break down, and each artist fights for what’s right in front of them—a person who sees them for all that they are and a love that could mean more than they ever imagined possible.
Critic reviews
“Victoria Lee aims straight for the heart, and pierces the center without restraint.”—Kosoko Jackson, author of the Lambda Literary Award finalist I’m So (Not) Over You
“A moving portrait of queer love, religion, recovery, art, and community.”—Mackenzi Lee, author of The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue

Jane Austen fan Amelia Bennett sneaks away from a dull tour of an English country manor, only to run into a man more dashing than Mr. Darcy himself. About to lose his ancestral home to family debts, charming aristocrat Tom Calder invites his American guest to join him in drinking his way through the estate’s priceless wine collection. But when they wake in his bed the next morning, they’re convinced that in their drunken haze they witnessed a murder. Problem is, the body has vanished and no one believes them.

Gemma Peters is doing fine. She’s making a name for herself in the L.A. music biz as a radio producer. She’s got a ride-or-die best friend in Lila, and she gets to come home to Rex, her loving Labrador, every night. But ever since her rock star ex-boyfriend used her to get a record deal from her rock legend dad, she’s made a “no musicians” rule when it comes to dating that’s becoming more like a “no dating” rule, period. So, when Gemma crashes (literally) into Jack one Thursday morning, at first she feels like fate might finally be doing her a favor. The truth is this is no ordinary Thursday.

Story
Psychic-medium Sylvie Young starts every show with her origin story, telling the audience how she discovered her abilities. But she leaves out a lot—the plane crash that killed her parents, an estranged adoptive family, and the fact that her agent insists she research some clients to ensure success. Thomas Holmes’s next story at the L.A. Times may be his last, but he’s got a great personal pitch: “grief vampires” like Sylvie who prey upon the loved ones of the deceased have bankrupted his mother. He’s dead set on using his last article to expose Sylvie as a fraud.

The easiest way to get over someone is to never see them again, right? So when my ex stomps on my heart and throws it into the ocean...I decide to spend my summer on the opposite side of the country. And this summer is all about me: mending my broken heart (screw all men), figuring out what I want to do with my life (a life that thankfully does not include my ex), and trying to better myself (does eating ice cream count?). But all of my perfect planning comes to a halt when the sexiest lifeguard in existence asks me out. I have to say no.

Holden James picked the worst time to have a meltdown. His chance to audition for his favorite game show, Madcap Market, should have been a moment of triumph—a glorious, loving homage to his adored mom, who died six years ago. Instead, he’s destroying the minibar in a grim Los Angeles hotel room…recently dumped, partnerless and sliding into a crushing black hole of anguish. But the hotel service in abject misery is sublime. It even comes with an unfairly fit and sexy concierge who arrives at the door with pizza, Monopoly and deliciously distracting forearms.

A Believable Romance
The sex and language in this book were a little out of my comfort zone, but I pushed through that because I try to broaden my horizons. I really enjoyed it. It was an intimate look into the life of a nontraditional couple, a former addict, and a person who had grown up in an Orthodox community. There was a lot to learn and I felt that the relationship that was built between the characters was believable and heartwarming.

Can’t recommend enough!
This book covered topics that I don’t typically come across in my day to day life including trans romance, Orthodox Judaism and drug addiction to name a few and I am so very grateful for it. While it is fiction I feel that it opened my eyes on some intimate topics that I was naive to. You absolutely fall in love with the characters and Victoria’s writing style allows you to get to know them and their story on what seems like such an intimate level. It was a beautiful story that is so worth reading! Can’t recommend enough!

A slow burn romance with a unique storyline
I was looking for stories with trans men or transmasc leads. Though Wyatt is the second most important character rather than the main character (Ely, a cis woman), I really enjoyed this book and we got a good bit of perspective from Wyatt throughout. It was refreshing seeing a trans man portrayed as sexy but not fetishized and his transness was discussed but wasn’t fixated on. It was also nice seeing it be a non-issue for Ely.
If you like a slow burn, push and pull, will they won’t they type of story, this is for you.
Having the storyline focus on recovery, art, and Jewish culture was also a unique perspective I haven’t seen depicted before. I sped through this novel and hope to see more works by this author.

A shot into our inner life
Loved this book! Gilli Messer Joseffy and Scott Turner Schofield
Narration is sensitive and beautiful - they are bringing the story to life. I really felt that I got to know both Ely and Wyatt and follow their journey.
Through their eyes and stories we learned about the past, we lived the present and we are looking forward for their future together - as a couple and as creative people that will work together .
I decided not to describe the story - I invite you to listen and follow their life.
Kudus to Victoria Lee for writing such a beautiful, sad , happy and story.
