About this listen

When her late father bequeaths his entire estate, including the family business to Emma Elmstone, she’s just as surprised as her brother, Theo. As is customary, Theo expected to inherit everything and is barely able to contain his anger when he discovers that their father had other plans. Eventually, Theo offers Emma his love and support, and Emma is delighted.

But when Emma starts to become confused and forgetful, she worries that she’s cursed with the same fate as her late mother, who died in a Yorkshire asylum when Emma was still a babe in arms.

One disastrous night, Theo has Emma committed to Saint Luke’s; London’s most notorious asylum. Whilst there, she’s persuaded by the suave and handsome Doctor Rayne that all she needs is rest and she’ll soon be able to go home. But first, she must give up the lies and fantasies that she’s convinced herself are true.

As Emma spirals deeper into her apparent madness, will there be anyone who can truly save her? Or is she destined to follow in her mother’s footsteps, and succumb to the asylum, forever.

Mary Anne Bowman uses a subtle, deft touch in voicing the characters in this book, partially the many male characters. The story has a timely resonance in light of Britney Spears’ revelations about the conditions of her conservatorship.
