Publisher's summary

What happens to the happily ever after when the ever after has already happened? A spirited courtship, indeed! Jane Austen's much adored Pride and Prejudice is transfigured in this regency adaptation. That fickle friend Fate intervenes when an unexpected event threatens the happily ever after of literature's favorite love story.

The gentlemen from Netherfield have left, winter is upon the land, and after a horrifying carriage accident, Elizabeth Bennet finds her spirit transported as if by magic into Mr. Darcy's London home. Paranormally tethered to the disagreeable man, it doesn't help that he believes she is a phantasm of his love-struck mind and not the real Elizabeth.

Somehow, they must learn to trust, learn to love, and learn to bring Elizabeth back to her earthly form before it is too late.

Love, Love, Love this version!

Very well written. I love the variation that have ODC together for most of the book. The way they got together and found love was so nicely written. I wish the books would state the time together and those are the books I would buy!

Otherworldly JAFF

ODC find themselves tethered together, although one of them is possibly no longer sane.

Darcy is seeing Lizzie when she is not actually there, as though in his dreams, while he is awake. There must be a reason, or is he losing his reason?

It’s a good story as we wait to see if he will figure it out. Will he and Lizzie figure it out together, or will his family have him committed?

Brady Smith has a perfect voice for Darcy, with that marvelous baritone. For your listening pleasure, however, slow the speed to 0.80 as he is rushing through this one and the words are worth hearing. This occasionally leads to longer pauses, but the overall effect is better.

A Definite Favorite

This story has been emotional, funny, and I've found myself holding my breath in anticipation for what was to happen. I love this story and I highly recommend it! I can't wait to read more from this author.

Favorite PPV so far and I have ”read” many!!!

The story is excellent and Brady Smith’s narration of Mr. Darcy is dreamy! Very warm and deep, just what you hope Mr. Darcy would sound like! I wasn’t sure I was going to like this story at first, I thought it sounded like it might be too fanciful, but I was so pleasantly surprised by how romantically captivating it was! Excellent amazing even suspenseful “read”! Couldn’t wait to see what happened next! Well done!!!

A "Spirited" Variation

The story opens with our heroine inside of a dream. She's weightless and satisfied in a wonderland of books straight from a fairy tale, but the dream changes when she realizes that Fitzwilliam Darcy is in the dream with her...and to make matters even more confusing, this dream version of Darcy clearly finds her much more than "tolerable."

As reality begins to set in, Elizabeth realizes that her surroundings and situation are not a dream at all and Mr. Darcy is not an idealized figment of her imagination. She is trapped in a ghost-like state, physically tethered by some invisible force to the man himself, and wherever he goes, she must follow. As for Darcy, he initially enjoys this private vision of the woman he already loves beyond reason, but once it becomes clear she is more than a dream, he concludes that he must be delusional and tries to rid himself of Elizabeth's apparition.

That's how the book begins, and like everything KaraLynne Mackrory sets her pen to, the story is an absolutely delightful and engrossing variation on the world of Pride and Prejudice. Brady Smith does a wonderful job of narration. He has a beautiful voice and there is always clarity for who is speaking.

There are several scenes in this story so sweet and lovely and original that I can heartily recommend it as one of my favorites in the JAFF genre. I put this one off for a long time because the supernatural variations are not always my cup of tea, but I should have known better given how good all of Mackrory's stories are.

This one is very low angst, which I prefer. I dislike stories that torture people endlessly with misunderstandings that make no sense or abusive behavior or unfair scenarios that substitute for actual story. Mackrory never indulges in those things, and Haunting Mr. Darcy has a very well-considered plot with characters all behaving in understandable and rational ways within the somewhat supernatural premise. The resolution is well-done; the character development is subtle and top-notch; and the premise is an absolute chef's kiss. So fun. Well worth a credit.

Sidenote (or is it an end note?): If after reading the premise for this one, you just think you'd prefer something more realistic, I can also recommend Blinded By Prejudice from the same author. It is my favorite of hers by a long shot, and that's saying something as I have enjoyed every story she's published for us and wait anxiously each year to see if she's given us another.

Elizabeth is a ghost of sort

Quite funny and I really enjoyed Darcy and Elizabeth in the P&P retelling.

Both appeared to be true to their character.

My all time favorite P&P variation

I love the humor and true to cannon character traits. I was a little annoyed by exact quotes spoken by one character in cannon were spoken by other characters, and by Darcy's quick removal to Pemberly, but given the ultimate enjoyment of reading such a fantastic romantic comedy, on the whole there can be no cause to repine.

My favorite variation

I absolutely love this pride and prejudice variation. Karalynne MacKrory has an incredible imagination and she does an excellent job of creating a wonderful and entertaining story. The only thing I found a little upsetting was that the narrator spoke way too fast.

Wonderful to have this story on audio now!

I have reread this stuff so many times I’ve lost count, at least once a year, if not more. The book has just been rereleased and a great bargain. We are so fortunate to have a growing number of really top drawer authors now but when this book was first published that number was smaller, so we have been particularly blessed to enjoy Mackrory’s talents for quite awhile. But her stories seem just as unique now as when they first stood out in the crowd.

I highly recommend Haunting Mr. Darcy, both book and audio. Come, lose yourself in this narrator’s wonderful voice. Bump-ba-bump. Sigh.
