Publisher's summary

In the early hours of the morning, Careen becomes Matthew Grayson's wife--and then, in a blink of an eye, his widow. How can she tell the family she’s never met that her own cousin is responsible for their son’s death? While she waits for the right moment to admit the cousin's guilt, a budding attraction grows between Careen and her new brother-in-law, Joshua. But this will only complicate matters, especially when the truth finally comes out.

Joshua Grayson could never understand why his brother left the family ranch to wed--in secret--a woman he'd never met. And now Matthew is dead. Killed just moments after taking his wedding vows. Joshua struggles with both resentment and a growing attraction for his mysterious sister-in-law. He knows Careen is hiding something, but can he give love another chance, or is he just setting up his heart for another break?

Amazingly good Storytelling

When I finished this book I wondered if it was categorized incorrectly? When I read ‘clean’ book I usually translate into something other than I got out of this book. Don’t get me wrong. It is not raunchy. However, the book managed to convey the deep passion and love between the two main characters Careen and Joshua. There were numerous mentions of their faith and strong belief in God but it was done in an ordinary manner that seemed very normal to me. It was great story telling that took the listener on an exciting journey.

It starts out with a bang. Careen’s husband Matthew was shot in broad daylight shortly after their wedding. You quickly get into the fast paced, action packed story. I was alert and excited all the way through. Firstly, you know there is going to be trouble when she fails to tell her in-laws the full truth about the circumstances surrounding the death of her husband. There is a deep attraction between her and her dead husband brother Joshua from the start. However, it is uncertain if Joshua can find the strength to move on after the scars left by his dead wife and grasp their love. It gets even more complicated as they weave their courtship through the morning period proprieties. There were descriptions of intimate, passionate kissing. It was absolute delight to feel the magic of their budding love for each and await the next surprise. There were many twist and turns.

I love narrator of this book simply because she does what she is supposed to do. You forget about her and she does not take over the performance and become tiresome. The Southern accent was a nice change of pace and the kids voices were well done.

This is worth a credit and I highly recommend this book. I can’t wait for the next one in the series. I hope there is more.

Amazing story!

**I was given a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review

This is my first Marie Higgins book, but definitely will not be my last. From the very start, I knew this was going to be one I couldn't take my earbuds out for! Not only was it a great western cowboy romance, but it had suspense as well! My kind of book! From the first scene with Matthew and Careen to the end with Joshua, I just had to keep listening. The characters are well developed, the relationship between Careen and Joshua was frustrating and fun, between Careen and the rest of the family was heartwarming. You couldn't help but just want to move onto the ranch and be a part of it! Their acceptance of Careen, love they showed and protectiveness from her cousin just made you fall in love with them.

This is not my first Leonor A Woodworth narration...she was amazing in Anne Patrick's "A Familiar Evil". Definitely one of my favorite narrators, brings all the characters to life, easy to tell who is speaking and makes the books so I don't want to put them down!

I am looking forward to my next listen of Marie Higgins!

Great Western Historical Romance - More Please :-)

On her wedding day, mail-order bride and Matthew Grayson leave the church and step outside. There's a drunken brawl going on down the street and soon gunshots fired. Careen looks down at her husband, who is still holding her hands but is obviously dead.

Instead of going on a honeymoon she must arrange to take her husband's body to his family. After that, she is not sure what she'll do because she has no desire to go back to her family which consists of an elderly aunt and a weird cousin.

Once she reaches the Grayson estate she sees the family who loves one another very much, they're very close knit and caring.

After a few days she starts noticing Josh, her husband's brother, and begins to have feelings toward him. However, the proper time for morning for her deceased husband is one year. Josh has twin daughters and a secret about his first wife… Will he return her feelings? Who is trying to track Careen down and why?

What may seem to be a traditional Western, historical romance is much, much more. There are twists and turns that you do not see coming. Everything is up in the air until the very last chapter. It closes with a wild revelation.

A fantastic book by Marie Higgins… I hope that this series will become available on audio as this book is THAT GOOD. There are several characters who could spin off into books of their own.

Leonor A. Woodworth was great and I enjoyed her Midwest accent. It was not difficult to decipher between characters – male or female. She also performed the role of children (which can be really annoying) realistically and without flaw.

*I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my review written above. I have no qualms recommending this book to anyone who loves historical, Western romances. I did not realize it was classified as a Religious & Inspirational, but the mentions of faith, hymns and prayers throughout make sense!

Note: Absolutely nothing to warn you about

A Sweet Christian Romance

Narration - Leonor A. Woodworth - OK
Ok narration, I actually like her male voices better than her females.

This is a clean historical romance. I believe it's supposed to be in the Christian Romance genre so it includes references to God, hearing our prayers, believing in his will, basically just a good ole Wild West, God Fearin' Christian Family.

I really enjoyed the story all the way until near the end, then it went a little over the top for me and became too much Scooby Doo. We went from one bad guy to three. All the details of why were just told to us by the bad guy(s) in the typical Scooby Doo episodic fashion. Up until that point though, I really enjoyed it.

Howdy Partner!

8 hrs and 58 mins in cowboy land can sometimes be good, and sometimes not. This it was good! The story line in this book was wonderful! I liked this, i really did! If you like cowboys, you like this story about family, mystery, and love. It is a good clean story, no sex scenes. Good Christian novel. There is a BUT, but it is a TO clean. I mean there is nothing wrong with a christian book, but when you are talking westerns you want some "cowboy language". It is almost like Marie Higgins without dirtying it up, and that is not that good fit to a book like this! I found some parts very predictable and that is a big minus in my book, still the book itself is a 4 out of 5 book!

Leonor A. Woodworth reads this a bit "staccato". I don't like that! So i find the reading a bit weird, i had some problems with the "flow" of the book you could say! Leonor A. Woodworth is just a LITLE over 3,5 i would give her a 3,6, and i find hear reading maybe the worst thing about this audio book! It frustrates me that she does a job that kind of destroys a lot of my book! Still, she is not the worst! Still it brings the book down!
