Publisher's summary

"Whether this is the listener's first or fiftieth In Death story, they're guaranteed an enjoyable listening experience."-AudioFile on Abandoned in Death

Homicide detective Eve Dallas must untangle a twisted family history while a hostage’s life hangs in the balance—in the new In Death novel by New York Times bestselling author J. D. Robb.

The woman’s body was found in the early morning, on a bench in a New York City playground. She was clean, her hair neatly arranged, her makeup carefully applied. But other things were very wrong—like the tattoo and piercings, clearly new. The clothes, decades out of date. The fatal wound hidden beneath a ribbon around her neck. And the note: Bad Mommy, written in crayon as if by a child.

Eve Dallas turns to the department’s top profiler, who confirms what seems obvious to Eve: They’re dealing with a killer whose childhood involved some sort of trauma—a situation Eve is all too familiar with herself. Yet the clues suggest a perpetrator who’d be roughly sixty years old, and there are no records of old crimes with a similar MO. What was the trigger that apparently reopened such an old wound and sent someone over the edge?

When Eve discovers that other young women—who physically resemble the first victim—have vanished, the clock starts ticking louder. But to solve this case she will need to find her way into a hidden place of dim light and concrete, into the distant past, and into the cold depths of a shattered mind.

Great!

Only disappointment is that I finished it by the end of the day! Looking forward to the next one, as always. JD Robb and Eve Dallas are always entertaining!

Another Great Eve Dallas and crew book

I enjoy getting with Eve, Rouke and the rest of the gang. I wish I had some of Eve's friends.

Grit

Grit drives Dallas and made her and Roark the survivors and thrivers they have become. This series continues to be one of my favorites because of their humanity and gritty spirit to defend who and what they love.

Still loving In Death Stories

Over 50 books and not bored yet. Susan Erickson is by far one of the best performers, talented, and Fantastic. The story itself very catching. I was not disappointed. I re-listen to this series regularly mainly because other stories just don’t capture me as theses do. However, Nora Roberts story “Witness” and “The Search” are super awesome as well.

Solid Eve Dallas mystery

Solid story. Appearances from all my favourite characters. This isn’t one of the most suspenseful or emotionally wrenching stories. Nothing too far-fetched. Just a really solid continuation of the Eve Dallas universe. Well worth my Audible credit.

Enjoyed story

Robotic speaking style and significant accents used unnecessarily made it a challenge in some areas.

As usual, a great story and fantastic performance

I did a combo read/listen with this one as I didn’t want to put it down. The tale is interesting and well told with some flashback sequences that help propel the story. There are good clues and some red herrings. A good all around mystery/police procedural. As usual, Susan Erickson’s narration of the audiobook was fantastic.

I really enjoyed the way the secondary characters helped to propel the narrative. Robb has created such a vital and realistic world here that the secondary characters become as familiar and important to the reader as the MCs. Robb did a great job of giving page time to some who we have seen a lot of lately and of bringing back some others. Was thrilled to see Jamie again and have him as an active part of the process. Again, referencing the audio, I am in awe of Erickson’s ability to keep all these voices consistent over the years and to employ them in scenes with multiple characters speaking.

I also throughly enjoy the elements away from the crime. The descriptions of Mavis’ house renovations, the descriptions of the city, the social commentary. In this book it was particularly enjoyable as the flashback time period is current to my lifetime and thus I could enjoy the commentary even more. I may not be able to relate to 2060 but I can relate to the 1970’s, ‘80’s, early 2000’s!

Robb is such a good storyteller and has world building and character development down to a science. I will never tire of these books and I hope both Nora Roberts and Susan Erickson are staying fit and healthy and continue to write and perform these books for a long time to come!

Very Well Done!

I enjoyed this one quite a lot. I enjoy all of them quite a lot, but this one had a little extra something that really made it rather unique for me. I enjoyed the Before and Now aspect presented in the plot. I figured early on what must've happened, but it was still fun watching it all unfold. Must admit, I was still surprised when the culprit was revealed. As usual, it was a treat catching up with the gang. Well Done!
