About this listen

Years from now, America is slowly collapsing. Crops are drying up and oil is running out. People flee cities for the countryside, worsening the drought and opening the land to crime. Amid this decay and strife, war veteran David Parrish fights to keep his family and farm together. However, the murder of a local child opens old wounds, forcing him to confront his own nature on a hunt through dust storms and crumbling towns for the killer.

A Striking Piece of Fiction

Above All Men is a striking piece of fiction. Set in a a future rural America where all of our modern conveniences are withering in the wake of economic collapse and natural disaster, the story focuses on a man struggling to keep his family and his farm together, while everything around him is torn apart. Also suffering from PTSD, he must preserve his sanity in a world gone mad.

Shonkwiler's words are sparse yet cutting, like they landscape they depict. Furthermore, the narration as performed by Dane Elcar allows the material to transcend the written words. His use of character voices and choices regarding mood and timing make this an audiobook I will gladly recommend to others.
