About this listen

An unpauseable EMP boxset with a brilliant twist!

The Final Homestead

After an EMP strike leaves the country with no power or communications, James Bowers, a fourth-generation cattle rancher, must rescue his wife and son from the chaos engulfing San Antonio, Texas. But with so many unprepared, James discovers more than one type of enemy.

Storm Surge

Maxine Winters, an overworked yet successful veterinarian, finds herself trapped out at sea when an electromagnetic pulse erupts over South Florida. Stranded and concerned for her family's safety, she must rely on her wits to reach landfall before the storm hits. Little does she know that the incoming Category Four hurricane is the least of her problems.

Good but predictable

Great story line and I enjoyed listening to to Cheryl and Gwen. I found the characters realistic. Max and family wonderful to get to know. I just found things too predictable.
Of course the prisoners escaped and Roy found his family. I knew what would happen long before it happened. I read til the end because I liked most of the characters and wanted the final reunion to take place.

first book was very good. second was not so good. second book couldn't hold my interest and there were many errors in that should have been caught if the book had been proofed

somewhat implausible and not well thought-out

and both books they use an EMP and terrorists/ soldiers in their attack, I find this to be foolish. when common projections speculate a 80 to 90% casualty rate with him the first one to two years after an EMP, why would you put boots on the ground right away? an enemy would let the population die off and then go finish the remaining 10 to 20%.
another bone of contention what's the second book they talked as though they were falling off a 50 year supply of food in backpacks in canoes at most the group may have been able to carry 10% of that. the 50-year supply in a bunker the size described is a bit implausible in and of itself. the amount of supplies described would probably fill 1 1/2 to 2 semi trailers.

bad narrator

The story is good however the 2nd half narrator is hard to listen too. sounds like a robot voice and constantly hearing heavy breathing and other background noise.

Review of Aftermath

I feel that the preppier community and those that like apocalyptic fiction and film will have a deeper appreciation for This box set. Though only one of the books will hold your attention as the narration is a pleasant voice and one that gives the characters life. Listening to Cheryl narrate Aftermath was an enjoyable experience her voice made the book play out like a movie in my mind. The book is a bit more descriptive in the way the author describes violent behavior but it doesn’t sugarcoat the human experience at a point where humanity is at his worst.

But it also highlights the compassion and the good of humanity

Irritating at some points

The book felt like it was concentrating on too many detail things at some points, and not concentrating enough on others that were more important. The end of the book definitely felt rushed with a lot of loose ends really not answers.

GOOD STORY - BAD NARRATION

I enjoyed the story line. Know ahead of time that the boxset is two separate books with different characters. I liked the characters in both books. The narration was painful. It seems like the narrator is reading the book and pausing at the end of each line, not the end of each sentence...

Aftermath review

Some plot issues and research was a little light but all in all an entertaining story. Maxine was a likeable character that was easy to root for. The family dynamic was stressed but that is how life will be after an EMP.
