Publisher's summary

One thousand people left a failing Earth to embark on a 30-year journey to a promising new world. All passengers were placed in hibernation pods, to be awakened one month before obtaining orbit around their new home. The starship they traveled in was fully automatic and worked almost flawlessly.

When they arrived, they found a virgin world of breathtaking beauty, with sparkling water and clean, fresh air. Avalon was paradise. What these pioneering colonists would soon discover is...paradise comes at a price.

Fast moving sci-fi adventure

This is the continuing story of the colonists on Avalon and the central character, Al Clark. If you want deep, philosophical SF with great meaning, skip this book. But if you like fast moving sci-fi adventure, this is a good listen. I found the plot and action in this installment even better than the first.

Review: This is a review of the Audiobook version of Al Clark, Book 2: Avalon

This narrative continues the saga of Al Clark and the people who were aboard the Excalibur ship 4 years into their settling of the planet Avalon.

This story hits the ground running and doesn't stop until the ending which is a scant 6 hours and 3 minutes later. This audiobook was wonderful to listen to and as I had just finished listening to Al Clark Book One, this story line was fresh in my mind.

Al Clark who is a human-cybernetic being, has the ability to be in what we would consider a "normal" human state of being; human reaction times and strengths. Al also has the ability to attain an "enhanced" state of being by repeating a phrase that will invoke the super-human or enhanced abilities which include strength, speed, enhanced sight, and hearing, all the good stuff we want our super-heroes to have.

He has only used these enhanced abilities at times when they are needed to protect the people who reside with him on Avalon, which includes the indigenous people who were there when the ship and people arrived from Earth.

Al needs a power source to maintain his cybernetic physiology and over the course of time his power has gradually dwindled to a very low level.

They have the technology to fabricate and build a power pack on the ship, however they need metal of a specific kind to do that.

The dinosaurs, devil dogs, and giant birds; have banded together to try to kill the people since the people being there has changed the predator/prey balance. These are thinking and reasoning creatures and are able to have some success at eliminating some of the people. Al has further depleted his power source by using his enhanced mode to save people and combat the predators.

There is also an event that happens that causes the Excalibur which is in orbit above the planet, to destabilize out of orbit and eventually crash on the planet. There is a mad rush to remove everything that can be used later on the planet. This includes tools for fabricating things that are needed, medical devices and instruments, robots, and all manner of equipment.

Al uses a lot of his dwindling power to do a search on all decks and rings of the ship to make sure no one is left behind.

As a result of this last happening, Al has some issues with becoming unable to move and barely makes it to the shuttle that is waiting for him.

In the course of searching for metal on the planet, the search party finds an observation post of indeterminate age and, oh wait... Get the audiobook/book and find out for yourself!

This is one awesome story! I liked and enjoyed the first audiobook. I love this one! This story is well written, and while there are some parts that I found a bit gruesome, it is not unreasonably so.
There is also some humor which I enjoyed a great deal.

I can hardly wait to listen to, or read the next book.

Jonathan G. Meyer's writing is very well orchestrated and the story progresses rapidly, unlike the first book. During listening to this audiobook I found myself very caught up in the suspense of the story.

Narrator: Timothy McKean did a superb narration of this audiobook and I believe his voice acting has become more refined and fuller with all the many different voices, characters, and accents he used.

It was a true pleasure listening to his performance. I was able to quickly get into the story and was really surprised at how quickly that 6 hours and 3 minutes seemed to pass.

I believe anyone from the age of 12 and above would enjoy this book.

Intense.

I loved book 1 and eagerly dived into this one. This sees the settlers having finally built a life for themselves on Avalon, they are trying to live day to day, but things are changing. Al Clark is running out of power and if they don't find some soon, he will die. The dinosaurs are also adapting to them and becoming more and more dangerous. Avalon isn't the place they thought it was either. Secrets are found out and the settlers will have a choice to make.

This was just as good as the first and I listened to it as much as I could because I needed to see what would happen. It's just over 6hrs long but felt much longer because it felt like so much was packed into the story. The plot was fast paced and intense at times, especially when the dinos attacked. There is more Dinosaurs and other animals in this, which I loved!!

Al Clark is just as awesome as he was in the first book. He is a great character and a memorable one too. I pretty much loved all the characters!! They were well written and developed and were easy to like too.

In all, this was a great read and one I highly recommend. I am so looking forward to seeing where the author takes the story because the ending was very intriguing.

I enjoyed Timothy McKeans performance here, more than I did in the first. He read this much better and I was able to follow who was talking. He also put more performance into this one and made me eager too hear the 3rd one.

Good sequel to book 1

The main character - Al Clark - picks up where he left off in book 1. Helping to save the colonist from the dangers of a new and unexplored hostile world. Jonathan Meyer adds some new twists within the story which adds to the adventure. Timothy McKean does an excellent job in narrating the story.

An Entertaining Dinosaur Sci-Fi Adventure

I started with book two, without having read book one. I enjoyed book two, so I’ll probably go back and listen to book one at some point, but it still felt like a complete story, even if I missed out on some of the background. I found Avalon to be an interesting take on Sci-Fi by splicing in super intelligent dinosaurs. While it was an entertaining book overall, it did take a while for me to get into it. Probably a little more than halfway through I found myself hooked. The narrator took a little while to grow on me as well. In the beginning most of the voices were similar, but I didn’t have any problems keeping track of who was talking. Also, about halfway through I no longer noticed it. I don’t know if it was his narration getting better, or I was just so into the book I didn’t notice. Either way, it ended up being an enjoyable listen and I hope to listen to books one and three in the future.

What a surprise.

When I received the first Al Clark audiobook for a review I thought no way that six hours is enough for a book ( before hand I was listening to Space Operas as long as 50 hours but never less then 13 hours ) but the author Jonathan G. Meyer sure have proved me wrong to my surprise by writing a great six hours story Al Clark.
I had no idea that the author have decided to continue the story into a series and have not heard about the release of book 2 Avalon, only by luck the author reached me to listen and review book 3.
I was so happy to hear that he wrote a continuation to a book that I got founded of and when I explained to the author that before I can review book 3 I need to review book 2 he didn’t hesitated and gave me both.
So what can I say about Avalon?
That you will not be disappointed and grateful !!!
Narration by Timothy McKean is as awesome as usual and that I fully recommend this audiobook.

SciFi

It took me a little longer then expected to get into the book and I have to admit that I have not read or listened to book one. However I did not feel I was missing anything. It is actually an interesting read and different to other scifi books that I have read.
I also liked the narrator in this book I felt he suited the story.

a great follow up

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was a fantastic follow up to book 1. I was just as entertained as I was with the first one. The narration, pacing and dialog are all well done. I still think this series could use a bit more world building in the beginning, but it is still a fun listen and worth checking out.
