About this listen

The U.S. and China have emerged in the millennium as the pre-eminent superpowers. Japan and the U.S. have worked in secret at a disused nuclear safety research center on a remote island in the South China Sea to perfect a viable nuclear fusion reactor. Suddenly, the black veil of secrecy is shredded, the long-shot project is on the verge of breakthrough, and the Chinese want the prize for themselves.

Desert Storm combat-veteran Commander Ben McGuire, a small SEAL team, and an isolated group of scientists struggle with sabotage, typhoon weather, a rapidly approaching and extremely well equipped Chinese fleet, and a radical new reactor that some of the scientists are terrified of shutting down.

Ben McGuire, a battle-proven Naval officer, left active duty to save his marriage. In civilian life he works as a computer consultant. When the story heats up, he is serving out his annual two-week hitch aboard the Seventh Fleet Commander's flagship a few hundred miles away in the Sea of Japan. Thinking it a low priority issue, Navy officials dispatch the Reservist to run a mission to evacuate scientists from a nearby island. Events on the island will not only reunite him with an old love interest but also place him in a position to affect the balance of power between the U.S. and China for years to come.

For Mature Audiences Only: Explicit language and situational violence. Must be 18 years of age to purchase.

Critic reviews

"For the fans of Tom Clancy-type novels, have I got one for you! Techno-pop excitement that operates on many levels." (AudiobookCafe.com)
"Would hold its own against masters of the genre like Robert Ludlum and Clive Cussler." (Today's Librarian)

Only 3 reviews, but I bought this based on the strength of them. They were right. I would recommend this over and over. The use of a cast of speakers also set this apart. This was probably the best I have gotten from Audible, even above The Company and Odd Thomas.

The story was so-so. The background noise (drama) over shadows the narrators who had trouble of their own. I got tired of backing up to not hear again what usless piece of the non-puzzle I had missed.Tech buffer that I am, there is no Nobel Prize given for Mathmatics. Other technical difficulty I had? which internet protocols was he referring to and which ATV has a twist throttle.

"Dramatized" should appear in the title! The main narrator is fine, but the character players are so amateurish as to be laughable. The lame attempts at oriental accents stick out like a sore thumb, as well as the general bad acting. I also find the constant background sound effects to be more of a distraction than an asset.

Pass on this one!

Dreadful

This audio book is interesting. Unfortunately, the presentation is poor. The decision to have several readers act the various parts is helpful however the accompanying sound-effect background noises competes with the narration drowning it out over long parts. Worse, these background noises can be electronic whines (simulating loud engine noises) which would be annoying all by themselves. This would be an excellent read if it were possible to eliminate these noises. With them, I'm afraid the book will not be possible to finish.

Distracting sound effects ruin story

I could not tell if it was a good listen or not. The sound effects were much to loud and I could not hear the story. I tried several times to restart the book but could never get past all the noise. I would rather just hear the voices and forget the helicopters.

Noise, Noise, Noise

I find it difficult to believe that this book recieved such positive ratings. The story was predictable, full of racial stereotypes and simple not worth listening to, which I am sorry to report I did... all the way through.
